Marilyn K. (Damron) McCarthy

January 24th, 2013

Marilyn K. (Damron) McCarthy, age 89, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2013, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Marilyn was born on May 30, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri.  She was the only daughter of William D. and Anna (Rectkenwald) Damron.  The family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, and that is where Marilyn and her brother James were raised.
Marilyn met the love of her life, Joseph McCarthy, when he was stationed in Oklahoma during his time in the service.  The couple was married on May 6, 1944 and would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this May.  The couple moved back to Massachusetts when Joseph was discharged in 1945.  They spent several years in Somerville with their three children, James, Francis  and Robert, before settling in Wilmington in 1961.  She worked for many years as a switchboard operator.  Marilyn was a very neat and clean person.  She would always be cleaning the house, dusting, doing dishes or anything that she thought needed to be done, never just sitting back and relaxing.  When she wasn’t cleaning, Marilyn would spend time doing arts and crafts.  She loved to do needle point crafting and made many of the decorations throughout the house herself.  Along with arts and crafts, she loved to spend time out in her garden.

Marilyn was very active in the community of Wilmington, especially the Senior Center.  She loved to take part in the activities there, especially the line dancing.  Marilyn served as Commissioner on the Board for the Center and served as a liaison for the town in their dealings with the Minuteman Senior Service.  Marilyn also started and taught a nutrition class and a sewing class at the center.

Marilyn was the beloved wife of Joseph F. McCarthy of Wilmington. She was the loving mother of James J. McCarthy and his wife Christine of Billerica, Frances A. “Sissy” Dalton of Wilmington and Robert P. McCarthy and his wife Linda of Ashburnham.  She was the cherished grandmother of William and Angela McCarthy, Christopher Dalton, Robert Jr., Kevin, Brian and Patrick McCarthy and the dear great-grandmother of 13.

Family and friends gathered at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rt. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, January 28th, at 9:00 a.m., and celebrated a  funeral mass at St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rt. 38), Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m.  Interment took place in Wildwood Cemetery.  Visiting hours were held on Sunday, January 27th, from 2-4 p.m.  Memorial donations in Marilyn’s name can be made to Alzheimer’s Association Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
