Retired Wilmington Police Officer James E. Burke, age 79, of St. Augustine, FL, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, died peacefully on April 7, 2015.
Jim was born on January 24, 1936, in Malden, MA; he was the dear son of the late John and Dorothy (Gallagher) Burke. Jim was raised and educated in Wilmington and graduated Wilmington High School with the Class of 1953.
Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 26, 1954, during the Korean War; proudly serving as a Staff Sergeant with the 602nd Camron. Jim was honorable discharged on February 25, 1958 and returned home to his family in Wilmington.
Jim was appointed to the Wilmington Police Force as an interim officer in 1964 and permanent officer in 1967; he served the community for more than 20 years and retired in May of 1986. Jim was also a very talented carpenter and for many years he operated his own construction company where he remodeled countless homes in and around Wilmington.
Jim is survived by his children James E. Burke, Jr. & his wife Beth of Wolfeboro, NH, Margie Fuller & her husband David of Tuftonboro, NH, Michael Burke & his wife Karen of Wilmington, MA, Janet Burke and Michele Burke both of Tewksbury, MA, and Nancy Runnals of Wolfeboro, NH; his grandchildren Craig Burke & his fiancé Tara, Meghan Burke, Matthew, Kelsey, and Hailey Fuller, Kevin and Scott Burke, and Brian Kumm & his wife Amanda, and his great-grandsons Brayden Burke and Charlie Kumm.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, April 25th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
