Bemis, Lillian

Lillian M. (Gulliksen) Bemis, age 93, a long-time resident of Billerica, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, March 6, 2011.

Lillian was born on May 19, 1917, in Everett, MA, she was the cherished daughter of the late Askel and Laura (Sigrid) Gulliksen. Lillian grew up in Everett and was educated there.

She married her sweetheart Howard H. Bemis, Jr., in 1938 and the couple celebrated over 52 years of marriage before his passing in 1990. Lillian and Howard had a great life together, they built their own home in Billerica in 1941 and raised three great sons. Lillian loved being a mother and she devoted her life to her three boys, they were the center of her world.

Lillian was also quite a roller skater in her day, this is a sport she taught to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, it was her great-granddaughter that really excelled in the sport and became a World Champion Roller Skater. Lillian followed her to many competitions all over the world and delighted in her success.

Lillian was dearly loved by her family, she was always young at heart and a pleasure to be with, her great-grandson started his own pig racing business and named it “Grannies Racing Pigs”, Lillian made it to several races and was always acknowledged by her son and great-grandson as “Grannie”.

Lillian’s family also loved to throw her big birthday parties and everyone would attend, Lillian looked forward to those parties and to have her entire family around her, she had a great time.

Lillian’s favorite place to travel was Hawaii, she and Howard made many trips to the various Islands for over thirty years and met many celebrities, making memories to last a life time.

Prior to retiring, Lillian worked at Sweetheart Plastics in Wilmington for many years where she made many friends.

Lillian will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. She was a hard worker, very unselfish, loving, kind, and always doing for others. She was the center of her family and will be greatly missed by them.

Lillian was the beloved wife of the late Howard H. Bemis, Jr., devoted mother of Richard Bemis and his late wife Betty Anne of Billerica, Bruce Bemis and his wife Janice Gifford of Lowell, and Wayne Bemis and his wife Shirley of Merrimack, NH and Bolivia, NC, loving grandmother of Linda Powderly, Robin Robbins, Paula LaPerrier, Tina Smith, Donna Ford, Lance Gifford, Dennis Bemis, Dawn Gifford, Kelly Bemis, Craig Colby, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, Lillian was also the dear sister of the late Marie Kelley and is survived by many dear friends.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington. Interment to follow in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica. Visiting hours Friday, March 11th from 4-8 p.m.

Memorial donations in Lillian’s name may be made to the Aleppo Transportation Fund, 99 Fordham Road, Wilmington, MA 01887.

    “MA” Bemis was a gentle and loving person. She invited everyone to come and visit her. Her family always came first and you always felt like you were her family. Rollar Skating was one of her passions. How she loved it. We both have such wonderful memories of this great lady. We love you.
