Briggs, Theresa

Theresa M. (Hennessy) Briggs, age 83, of Wilmington, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Winchester Hospital.

Born in Boston on April 8, 1926, Theresa was the daughter of the late William & Nora (Reidy) Hennessy. Theresa was raised and educated in Charlestown and was a graduate of Charlestown High School. She spent her summers in Wilmington, enjoying Silver Lake as a child. She married Henry J. Briggs, Jr. on October 12, 1947 and they celebrated 50 years of marriage prior to his passing in April of 1998. Theresa and Henry lived in Charlestown for the first several years of marriage and until they built their family home in Wilmington in 1954, where she resided until her death.

Theresa was very active in St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington, she did a lot of community service with the church, she was active at church fairs, suppers, penny sales, minstrel shows, or any activity that was going on in the church, she loved her church community and family. In her spare time, Theresa enjoyed oil painting, wood working, crafts, going on recreation trips, traveling up the coast to Maine and she loved Silver Lake. Prior to retiring, Theresa was employed as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service in Andover for many years.

Theresa was the devoted mother of Jim Briggs of Litchfield, NH and William Briggs & his wife Anne of Nashua, N H, loving grandmother of Matthew Briggs, 2nd Lieutenant William Briggs, Jr., and the late Anne Marie Briggs, great-grandmother of Taylor, Nicole, & Kayla Briggs, sister of the late Helen Sordillo, Eugene Hennessy & wife Bella, William Hennessy, Jr. & wife Lena, Joseph Hennessy & wife Janet, and Catherine “Betty” Wandell, sister-in-law of Daniel Wandell of Wilmington, also survived by many nieces, nephews, her dear friend Diane Wilson of Wilmington, and her Church family at St. Dorothy’s.

Family & friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, April 18th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours Friday, April 17th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.

Memorial donations in Theresa’s name may be made to St. Dorothy’s Church, c/o Church Rectory, 11 Harnden St., Wilmington, MA 01887.
