Burns, Richard

Richard R. Burns Jr. “Coach”, of Billerica, formerly of Reading, age 55, passed away April 9, 2011 at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with malignant melanoma.

Loving husband of Suzanne M. (McGrath) Burns, devoted father and hero to Ian P. Burns, beloved son of Richard R. & Virginia (Hamilton) Burns of Lynnfield, dear brother of Susan Maroni & her husband Tom of North Reading, Michael Burns of Danvers, Judy Turrene & her husband Paul of Reading, and Peter Burns & his wife Kate of Wakefield, brother in-law of John & Patrice McGrath of Walpole, Marianne Howard of Woburn, Bryan McGrath of Agawam, James & Andrea McGrath of Ashburnham, and Paul & Anne McGrath of Ontario, Canada. Rich is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews, one great nephew and his great-niece “his sweetie pie” and will be sorely missed by his constant companion Clancy.

Rich coached the Merrimack Valley River Rats. He was a former hockey coach for Reading Youth Hockey, former director of the Learn to Skate and Learn to Play program with Reading Youth Hockey.

Family and Friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, April 12th at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St., Reading, at 10:30 a.m. Interment Wood End Cemetery, Reading. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ian Burns Educational Fund, c/o Reading Cooperative Bank, 352 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA 01887.

    I am so sorry for your loss.. I know it’s bittersweet. Bitter because he’s gone, sweet because he isn’t suffering any more. I so glad that you two were with him and that his passing was a good one, dignified and peaceful.

    To Ian, Dick, Mike and Sam, I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Richie. I have very fond memories of coaching in Reading for the Learn to skate, learn to play, mites and squirts with Richie. We had a lot of fun together and he was always so wonderful with the kids! He will always be a shining light . I’m sad to lose such a great guy but while its our lose its Gods gain. He will continue to watch over all his loved ones from high above. We will miss you Richie.
