Antonio “Tony” Capritta, age 86, a long-time resident of Wilmington, died peacefully on February 27, 2011, at the E. N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, surrounded by his family.

Tony was born in Schenectady, New York, on January 20, 1925, he was the beloved son of the late Gaetano and Caroline (Agati) Capritta. Tony grew up in New York and was educated there, following High School Tony enlisted in the United States Navy on July 15, 1943. Tony was honored to serve his country during World War II, he was a Radio man 2nd Class for the Navy, an assignment that he was very proud of and received many commendations for his efforts. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1945.

Prior to retiring, Tony was an Engineer for the Harris Manufacturing Company for many years. A big sports fan, Tony loved to watch the Red Sox, Bruins, he followed golf, and for many years was the Official “Stats Taker” for the New England Patriots, a job that he enjoyed as much as watching the game itself.

In his spare time, Tony was an avid gardener and could also be found watching a quick game of “Wheel of Fortune”, his favorite television show.

Tony married Cynthia Esposito in the early 1970’s, they shared over 34 years of marriage and had a great life together with their family before her passing in 2006. Family was very important to Tony and he especially loved being a “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Tony was also a former officer and member of the Wilmington Sons of Italy, he and Cynthia attended many functions that were held at the Sons of Italy and enjoyed the company of many friends there.

Tony was a very kind and caring man who will be dearly missed by his family.

Tony was the beloved husband of the late Cynthia A. (Normine) (Esposito), dear brother of Angelo Capritta & his wife Pat of Illionos the late Beatrice Castaldo, and Connie Viscosi. Step-father of Michael Esposito & his wife Lee of Hampton, NH, Mark Esposito & his wife lisa, Dino Esposito & his wife Sheila, and Cindy Meehan & her husband the late Walter Meehan III all of Wilmington, loving “Papa” of Jacquelyn Esposito, Janet Cooke, Joseph Esposito, Celeste Scifo, Alycia Story, Gerald Esposito, Kathleen Esposito, Tiffany Meehan, Walter Meehan IV, and great-grandchildren Cynthia Scifo and Bella Esposito, Tony is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends gathered at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Wednesday, March 2nd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment took place in the family lot at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Memorial donations in Tony’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
