Charles “Charlie” Duffy, Jr.

Charles Duffy, Jr., “Charlie”, age 85, of Tewksbury, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, died unexpectedly at the Winchester Hospital on April 7, 2014.

Charlie was born on March 10, 1929, in Newton, MA; he was the beloved son of Charles Sr. and Mary E. (Canney) Duffy. Charlie lived in Newton before moving to Wilmington as a young boy where he was raised and educated. Charlie was a graduate of Wilmington High School with the class of 1947 where he met and later married his “high school sweetheart” Dorothea Froton also of Wilmington.

Charlie was inducted into the United States Army on February 27, 1951; he served overseas as a member of the 109th Infantry Regiment APO111 during the Army Occupation of Germany. Charlie received several commendations for his service during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on February 21, 1953, returning home to his family in Wilmington.

Charlie was very proud of serving his country, upon his return from active duty he joined the American Legion, VFW, and DAV, where he was an active member for many years. Charlie also marched in the Wilmington Memorial Day Parade for more than 50 years.

Charlie was a life-long member of the Tewksbury Wilmington Lodge of Elks and for more than 25 years was a cook at their annual family picnics in the Pine Grove.

In his earlier years, Charlie was an active communicant at St. Thomas of Villanova Church and a member of the Fr. Croke Council Knights of Columbus in Wilmington.

Prior to retiring, Charlie worked as a mechanic at the Highway Department for the Town of Wilmington for more than 30 years. Charlie was a “character” with a good sense of humor and made many friends at work throughout the years.

In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed attending and watching NASCAR Races, following all the Boston Sports Teams, and spending time with his family and friends.

Charlie was the dear father of James Duffy and his wife Barbara of Tewksbury, Karen Duffy Webster of Utah, the late Charles Duffy III, David Duffy and his wife Lynel all of Indianapolis, IN, Kevin Duffy of Boston, Mary Duffy and her wife Anne Cranshaw of Sherbourne, MA, and the late Michael Duffy of Portland, ME, loving “Grampa” of Lianne, David, James, Mark, Lynne, Danielle, Danny, John, Dylan, and Catherine, Great “Grampa Duffy” of Kylie, Cameron, Nicholas, and Colin, brother of Joseph Duffy of Wilmington and the late James Duffy, Uncle of Donna Luce, Diane Martin, Jay Duffy, and Maureen Beauregard. Former husband of Dorothea (Froton) Duffy of Indianapolis.  Charlie was also the long-time companion of the late Phyllis Campbell.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Wednesday, April 16that 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 15th from 4-8 p.m. Donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
