Daniel J. Bemis

March 1st, 2021

Daniel J. Bemis, fondly known as “Dinny” or “Danny” to his family and friends, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away at home on February 27, 2021, following a long, hard battle with cancer.

Dinny was born on September 17, 1940, in Winchester, MA; he was the cherished only son of Daniel and Mary Bemis. Dinny was raised and educated in Wilmington; in his early years he was quite an athlete who played football, baseball and hockey. Dinny was outgoing and friendly; he made many life-long friends while in school; he graduated Wilmington High School with the Class of 1959.

Dinny married the “love of his life” Beverly Wiseman on July 21, 1962; the couple built their home in Wilmington where they raised three wonderful children, Sheila, Danny Jr. and Maureen. Dinny was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who would do anything for his family. Dinny looked forward to family vacations, holidays, family dinners or any other occasion that brought his children and grandchildren together; he loved having them all around him.

Dinny had a great work ethic; in his early years he owned the Mobil Gas Station in town where he put in long hours, worked hard, treat people fairly and made great relationships with his customers. Dinny also gave back to community events and for many years sponsored town softball teams.

Dinny also started a career at the B & M Railroad where he worked as a machinist. Dinny stayed with the railroad when it was taken over by AMTRAK and continued a career that spanned nearly 30 years. Dinny saw many changes in the Railroad over the years; he was a Union Steward and was instrumental in making a great relationship between the company and their employees. Dinny was also fortunate enough to have his son Danny Jr. and grandson Ryan want to follow in his footsteps; they made a career choice to join the railroad and he got to work with his son for several years before his retirement; this was a special time for all of them. Dinny retired as a member of good standing with the IAMAW Union Local #318 in Boston.

Dinny was a social guy who loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved to travel all over but really enjoyed his vacations to Aruba and had many fond memories of family vacations to Hampton Beach with his children when they were young.

Dinny was so proud of his Irish Heritage and everyone who knew him knew he was Irish. Dinny loved listening to his Irish music, of course “O’ Danny Boy” was one of his favorites, he was always with an Irish themed baseball cap or his Scally cap to complete his wardrobe and he looked forward to his annual trip to the Irish Village on Cape Cod with his family and friends.

Dinny also loved his Boston Sports Teams, Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox but nothing compared to the passion he held for the New England Patriots; he was an ultimate football enthusiast. Dinny felt such pride as he was able to watch the Patriots win six Super Bowl Championships along with his family; he truly loved hearing that Boston was the “City of Champions”.

Dinny was a member of the Tewksbury Wilmington Lodge of Elks in Tewksbury and the Knights of Columbus in Tewksbury where he had many friends and volunteered for countless charity events throughout the years.

Dinny will be fondly remembered as a good guy; he loved his family and friends with all his heart. He adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will fondly remember all the fun times they had together. Dinny will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Dinny was the beloved husband of 58 years to Beverly Bemis (Wiseman), devoted father of Sheila M. Bemis & her fiance Richard Yetman of New Hampshire, Daniel J. Bemis, Jr. & his wife Mindy of Townsend and Maureen L. Abell & her husband Carl of Wilmington. Loving Grampy of Daniel J. Bemis III, Ryan Patrick Bemis & his wife Sumnina Rai, Jillian Zechner & her husband Joe, Kyle Abell & his wife Amanda, loving “Gee” to his Great-Grandchildren Joseph, Brooke and Brynn. Cherished son of the late Daniel H. and Mary (Doherty) Bemis, dear brother of Elaine Curran & her husband John and Nancy Bemis & her companion George Lent all of Wilmington, the late Mary Pitman and Claire Peterson, brother-in-law of Marcia Jacobs of California. Dinny is also survived by his long-time best friends Bob & Jean Kelley and their family from Tewksbury, as well as his many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, March 4th from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. immediately followed by a Graveside Service in the Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington at 12:30 p.m. Masks are required to be worn while in the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s memory may be made to Care Dimensions Hospice, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923. www.nicholsfuneralhome.com
