July 9th, 2013

Daniel J. Doherty, Jr., of Stoneham, died peacefully surrounded by his family on July 8, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Dan was born in Charlestown, MA, on January 4, 1941, and was the cherished son of the late Daniel J., Sr. and Giovanna “Lee” (Genna) Doherty.  Dan lived in Charlestown as a youngster and his family moved to Cambridge shortly thereafter.

Dan graduated from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge in 1959 before working as a Longshoreman on the Boston Waterfront. He then began working for New England Telephone and Telegraph in 1962 until he retired from Bell Atlantic in 1994.  After retiring from Bell Atlantic he continued working as a Communications Consultant traveling throughout New York and New England until retiring for good in 1999.

Dan married Gloria Jean Mercier (also from Cambridge) in 1960 and they lived in Cambridge with their five children until moving to Stoneham, Ma in 1971.

Dan loved being with his family and enjoyed having family gatherings and parties to get everyone together.  Some of the traditions that he enjoyed most were the yearly Halloween and New Year’s Eve parties in the basement of his Stoneham home and later at the Marconi Club in Stoneham and summertime cookouts at the cottage in Marshfield, Ma…..which included his favorite holiday….the Fourth of July!!!!  Dan was always playing games or sports.  During the family gatherings and cookouts he enjoyed playing cribbage, backgammon, cards, ping pong and horseshoes with anyone who was willing to play and he also loved to play walleyball with all his family members and racquetball with his son, son-in-laws and brothers at the Woburn Racquet Club.

Dan was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the Patriots and Celtics and also coached Little League baseball in Stoneham.  His favorite pastime was taking his motorcycle out for a ride and traveling to motorcycle rallies such as the Americade in Lake George, New York and the Honda Hoot, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Dan will be fondly remembered by his devotion to his family and his love of life and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

I will miss you Dad, so much. You were my strength. You taught me about honesty, helping others, respect and kindness and being a good person. You loved life and you loved to see others happy. You were a great daddy and worked hard to make sure we had what we needed and were happy. I learned so much from you…I remember you telling me, “you never know unless you ask” so I always asked, even if the answer was no, at least I knew that it was no. I am who I am today because of you. You taught us all how to defend our selves, which for me came in pretty handy over the years. I would like to thank you for being such a great father. I will miss you so much…you are in my heart always. Your loving daughter, Debi
