Darrell W. O’Malley

August 3rd, 2012

Darrell W. O’Malley, age 53, of Wilmington, died peacefully on August 3, 2012, at the Kaplan House in Danvers following a lengthy illness.

Darrell was born on December 11, 1958, in Niagara Falls, New York, He was the cherished son of Beverly J. (McLean) and the late Donald J. O’ Malley of Wilmington. Because he was from a military family, Darrell traveled all over the United States as a youngster and, following his dad’s retirement from the Air Force, the family settled in Wilmington in 1970.

Darrell was very intelligent and a great student; he commuted to Newman Preparatory School in the Back Bay of Boston from which he graduated early with the Class of 1975. Darrell was self-employed for many years in the Construction Business. While  he spent most of his career in the trades as a contractor, those that knew him best will remember his artistry as a finish carpenter. His illness forced his retirement at a young age.

Darrell will be remembered as a very kind, generous and caring man who would do anything for anyone.  Darrell loved his family and his friends unconditionally and in return felt the love they had for him.  Darrell will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many. One of his strongest attributes was his great sense of humor;  he was quick witted and always good with puns and  “one liners”.

Darrell is survived by his mother Beverly O’Malley of Wilmington and his sister, Branden O’Malley Singh of Concord, NH. He was the beloved uncle of Jocelyn Colby and her husband Edward and Katherine O’Malley  Martell and her husband Johnny McKinnon, and great-uncle of Johnny McKinnon III, Rebecca, Gabrielle, and Juliette Simard, and Cameron Colby. He was the loving companion of Nicole Johnson of Chelmsford.  Darrell is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and family pets Quincy and Austin.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington for Visiting Hours on Sunday, August 5, 2012 from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darrell’s memory may be made to the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave, Suite 302, Miami, FL, 33133.
