Diane N. (Hurd) Ryan

August 19th, 2013

Diane N. (Hurd) Ryan, age 74, a resident of  Wilmington for over 50 years, died peacefully surrounded by her family on August 18, 2013, at the Winchester Hospital following a long and courageous battle with Scleroderma.

Diane was born on July 2, 1939, in Boston, MA, she was the dear daughter of the late Naomi (Dayton) and Donald Hurd.  As a young girl, Diane, lived in Maine for several years before moving with her family to Provincetown, MA where she was raised.  Diane was an extremely intelligent student; she graduated  from Provincetown High School and went on to further her education at Merrimack College in North Andover receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Secretarial Science.

It was at Merrimack College that Diane met the “love of her life” Frederick C. Ryan.  Diane and Fred married on May 12, 1962, sharing more than 51 years of marriage and raising a wonderful family.  Diane always made her family her priority, as a mother, Diane  was very always very supportive and active in her children’s school, their extra activities, and at their sporting events.

Diane was very athletic, she played tennis with her husband and their friends every weekend.  Diane shared her extensive talent and knowledge of tennis by running the Wilmington Recreation Tennis Program for many years.  Diane was also active in the tennis program at Wilmington High School and a member of the Wilmington High School Booster’s Club.

Figure skating was another passion that Diane was actively involved in; as Past President of the Wilmington Figure Skating Club for many years, Diane coordinated and ran countless figure skating shows throughout the years, always helping children whenever she could.

Diane was a natural when it came to bookkeeping and multi-tasking , she was the office manager for Connaughton Construction Company in Waltham, for many years where she was a dedicated employee and took great pride in her work.  More recently, Diane was the bookkeeper for the Yoga Loft in Wilmington, until her illness forced her to retire.

In her spare time, Diane enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, she loved to travel with family and friends, but most of all cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.  Diane relished  her role as “Nana” to Alexandra, Zachary, Dylan, Dayna, Shane, Kyle, Ava, Conor, Donovan, Julia, and Levi, they were the light of her life.

Diane will be fondly remembered as quiet, gentle, and humble, although her illness was debilitating at times she always handles it with strength and courage, never complaining and always putting others first.  Diane spent countless hours volunteering and helping others, especially the children of the community.

Diane’s devotion and love that she gave to her  family and friends was unconditional, she truly enjoyed  spending time with each and every one of them and they will truly miss her.

Diane was the beloved wife of 51 years to Frederick C. Ryan, devoted mother of Catherine Copp &  her husband Steve of Wilmington, Tricia Ryan & her husband Russ of Dracut, Anne MacEachern & her husband Joe of Londonderry, NH, Fred Ryan & his wife Kate of Wilmington, and Jennifer Ryan & her husband Bill Engstrom of Wilmington, loving “Nana” of Alexandra, Zachary, Dylan, Dayna, Shane, Kyle, Ava, Conor, Donovan, Julia, and Levi, dear  sister of William Costa of Provincetown, the late Donna Wilbur, John  Hurd, and Robert Hurd, sister-in-law of Marie Crouse of Wakefield.  Diane is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
