downs-fayFay E. (McCauley) Downs, age 74, of Methuen, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, died Monday, November 2, 2009, at Wingate in Reading with her family at her side.

Born in Winchester, MA, on November 30, 1934, Fay was the dear daughter of the late James and Ann (Hurley) McCauley.  Fay grew up in Reading, MA, and was a graduate of Reading High School.  She married James N. Downs on May 29, 1954 and they moved to Wilmington where they raised their family.

Fay was very active with the youth of Wilmington, she could be found on the Pop Warner Field for many years whether she was helping to run the program, coaching a cheerleading team, or just lending a hand to one of the kids.  Fay was also the Wilmington High School Cheerleading Coach for many years.  She will be fondly remembered by many of the kids in Wilmington as a kind, compassionate, and a very giving lady.

In her spare time Fay enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bingo, wintering in Florida, and attending the many “Florida Reunions” that she and Jim shared with other Wilmington residents.

Fay will most notably be remembered for her devotion to her family, she was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and loving grandmother.  She was very actively involved with her children’s sporting and school events and then with her grandchildren.  There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her family.

Fay was the beloved wife of 53 year to the late James N. “Jim” Downs, who passed in December of 2007, devoted mother of Susan A. Downs & her companion Donald Lord, James N.
