Drew, Christine

June 2nd, 2010

Christine M. (McLaughlin) Drew, a former Wilmington resident and twin sister of the late Rachel Palmer, passed away June 2nd at the age of 79 of complications from congestive heart failure.

Chris was born on August 6, 1930 and raised in Woburn. She later moved to New Jersey and, ultimately, to Oregon in 1990. In high school, pre-Title 9, she was a member of the St. Charles girls’ basketball team for four years and won the Division Championship in 1948. Her most recent basketball focus had been the Portland Trailblazers as her family and friends can attest, but she was rooting for the Celtics going into the NBA finals.

Chris had many lives and touched many lives. After raising two sons and being a supportive wife to her husband’s career, she embarked on a new path. After studying at Rutgers, she became a counselor and ultimately, Co-director of Honesty House in Stirling, NJ and continuing on to become Director of the Somerset County New Jersey Council on Alcoholism. Her next role was an amazing “granny/nanny” to her two granddaughters, a job that brought her to Oregon. Once there she became an active member of the Lake Oswego Adult Center, Church of the Resurrection Quilters, and later the Mary’s Woods Community, where she volunteered regularly and most recently served as a Brain Fitness Coach.

Chris cherished her family and is survived by her sons, Walter Drew of Middletown, CT, Greg Drew and his wife Jane of Lake Oswego, OR, loving grandmother of Christine Drew of Auburn, WA, Alex Drew of New York City, Katherine Drew and her husband Jeremy Cogdill of Portland, OR and the late Danny Drew, dear sister of Jane McLaughlin of Woods Hole, MA,. She is predeceased by her parents James and Christine McLaughlin, former husband Walter Drew Sr., brother James McLaughlin, sister Lillian Hooban and twin sister Rachel Palmer. Christine was a long-time friend of Bill Wilson and is survived by countless friends and was grateful for each one of them.

A Resurrection Mass was celebrated on June 8th in the Mary’s Woods Provincial House Chapel in Lake Oswego, OR.

Christine’s family will be receiving people at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, June 26th from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Christine’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
