Elizabeth A. (Iula) Maher

Elizabeth A. (Iula) Maher, age 89, of Wilmington, died peacefully with her loving family at her side on October 12, 2012.

Elizabeth was born on January 7, 1923, in Boston, MA, she was the cherished daughter of the late Vito and Margaret (Pennachio) Iula.  Elizabeth was raised and educated in Charlestown and a graduate of Charlestown High School.

Elizabeth married “her sweetheart” William Francis Maher in 1946, they lived in Charlestown for several years before moving to Quincy in 1955 where they raised three wonderful children.
Family was first and foremost to Elizabeth, she was a devoted wife, mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.  Elizabeth enjoyed knitting for her family and friends and she was well known as an excellent cook, everyone looked forward to eating in the Maher household.

Elizabeth loved to travel with her family and friends, especially the long rides that she and Bill took not knowing where the road would take them; but just enjoying the time they spent together.

In 1988, Elizabeth and Bill moved to Wilmington and she quickly became involved in the Wilmington Senior Center. Elizabeth loved to take in their many excursions, she was very active in their exercise classes, and spent countless hours volunteering for their programs including the “Meals on Wheels” where she would deliver a warm meal, gentle conversation, and a great smile to cheer up a Senior who couldn’t get out and about.

Elizabeth will be fondly remembered as a beautiful woman inside and out, she was caring, giving, and very devoted to those she loved.  She will be truly missed.

Elizabeth was the beloved wife of the late William F. Maher, devoted mother of William A. Maher and his wife Noreen of Sarasota, FL, Margee Smith and her husband Leo and Michael J. Maher and his wife Catherine all of Wilmington, loving “Grammy”of Kevin Maher of Cambridge, Ann Benson of Kingston, Joshua Smith of Woburn, Jacob Smith of Wilmington, Christopher Maher of Springvale, ME, Douglas Maher of Raymond, ME, and Lee Maher of Casco, ME, dear “Gigi” of great-granchildren, William, Emily, Megan, Gavin, Lauren, Sofia, Andrew, Alba, Nora, and Luc, cherished daughter of the late Vito and Margaret (Pennachio) Iula, sister of Jean Dominico of Revere, Theresa Votruba of So. Dennis, and Victor Iula of Randolph.  Elizabeth is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family and friends gathered at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, October 16th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main Street (Rte. 38), Wilmington at 10:00 a.m.  Interment took place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.   Memorial donations in Elizabeth’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
