Ella J. “Ellie” Alden

August 26th, 2014

Ella J. Alden, “Ellie”, passed away peacefully at Kirkwood Corners in Lee, NH on August 24, 2014 at the age of 93.  Ella’s life was characterized by a love of family, friends and nursing.  Her capacity to care for and give to others was her greatest legacy.

Ella was born in Brookfield, Nova Scotia on May 5, 1921 to Porter T. and Alice Mae Dartt.  She grew up in Everett and Chelsea, Massachusetts and graduated from Chelsea High School as a member of the Class of 1940.  She proudly became a United States citizen in 1943.  Shortly thereafter, Ella earned her degree and became a Registered Nurse in 1944.  Following her education, she worked devotedly as a nurse in the U.S. Army and served her country as a Lieutenant in WWII.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed at many hospitals throughout Boston and in the surrounding areas.

Ella spent many years enjoying the beauty of NH and ME through camping.  She was also a lifelong member of the Eastern Star organization.  She lived many years as a resident of Wilmington, MA; Port St. Lucie, FL and Rochester, NH.  During the last 8 years, Ella has lived at Kirkwood Corners Senior Living in Epping, NH, where she remained vibrant and active and made many friends.

Ella lived each day of her life with gratitude, determination and grace.  She was an example and a gift to all who knew her.

Ella is survived by her children: Ellen White of Strafford, NH, Valerie Woodburn of Merrimack, MA, Beverly Alden of New Ipswich, NH, her brother, George Janes and his wife Margaret of Wilmington, MA, as well as a special niece, Lorna Taylor of Marlboro, MA.  In addition, she leaves behind many other nieces and nephews and a son-in-law, John White, residing in Dover, NH.  She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Ella was grateful for the two loving marriages, which she enjoyed during her lifetime.  She was widowed by Charles F. Sicard in 1969, following a 21-year union.  Later, after a 25-year marriage to E. Lloyd Alden, Ella was once again widowed in 1999.  She was also predeceased by her son, Charles F. Sicard Jr., her brother, John “Jack” Janes, her sister, Mae Taylor and her brother, Alex Dartt.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 30th at 11 a.m. in the Veterans’ section of the Wildwood Cemetery located in Wilmington, MA.  Immediately following the service, there will be a celebration of Ella’s life at 26 Harris Street in Nashua, NH.   In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the NH Association for the Blind or Sol Amor Hospice of North Hampton, NH.   Arrangements under the direction of Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., Wilmington.
