May 20th, 2014

Evelyn M. (Pereira) Griffin, age 83, a long-time resident of Wilmington, died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 20, 2014, at the Winchester Hospital.

Evelyn was born on December 2, 1930, in Cambridge, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Adelino M. and Valentina (Jorge) Pereira.  Evelyn was raised and educated in Cambridge, MA; she was part of a large and loving family.  As a young girl, Evelyn worked for National Casket Company in Cambridge where she made several life-long friends.

Evelyn married her “sweetheart” Albert Griffin on October 2,1954 and the couple moved to Wilmington in 1956.  Evelyn and Albert raised a beautiful family and shared many wonderful times together over the years.  Evelyn loved her family unconditionally; she always looked to forward to family holidays and celebrations just to have everyone together.  Evelyn was an amazing cook; she shared many family recipes, and enjoyed having her family and friends at the dinner table.

Evelyn and Albert loved to take trips and travel all over the country. Living in California, Arizona, Maine and Florida.

In her spare time, Evelyn enjoyed tending to her vegetable gardens, she was an avid reader, and was very talented at crocheting.  Evelyn also loved going for rides and sitting by the ocean.

Evelyn was a very active member of the Wilmington Senior Citizens Center where she had lots of friends.  Evelyn loved to participate in the many activities at the center, she enjoyed their trips, and she also used her talents to make countless crocheted quilts over the years for the bazaar’s and craft fairs.

Evelyn was known to be an AVID Boston sports fan; Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, or her beloved Red Sox, it didn’t matter what game was on Evelyn was glued to the television rooting on her favorite team.

Evelyn will be most fondly remembered for her devotion to her family and friends; she cherished her role as a wife, mother, and especially a grandmother.  Evelyn’s kindness also extended to strangers as she spent many years volunteering for different organizations just to make a difference in someone else’s life.  Evelyn was truly a remarkable lady who will be sorely missed by all.

Evelyn was the beloved wife of the late Albert G. Griffin, devoted mother of Manuel Griffin & his wife Frani, Michael Griffin & his wife Kathie, all of Wilmington, Stephen Griffin & his wife Beverly of Harrisville, NH, and Irene Riley & her husband Bill of Wilmington.  Loving Grandma of Scott, Gregg & his wife Kim, Mary-Kate & her fiancé Josh, Jennifer, Brian, Stephanie, and Alycia.  Cherished daughter of the late Adelino and Valentina (Jorge) Pereira, dear sister of Edward Pereira & his wife Beverly of Wilmington and Florida, Richard Pereira & his wife JoAnne of Tewksbury, the late Manuel Pereira, Valentine Pereira, and Mary Casanova.  Evelyn is also survived by a close family friend Robert (Nick) Nicholas Jr., her many nieces and nephews, and her little Jack Russell Terrier Tina.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service on Friday, May 23rd at 11:30 a.m. in the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington.  Interment to follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.  Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, May 22nd from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Memorial donations in Evelyn’s name may be made to the Wilmington Senior Citizens Center, 15 School St., Wilmington, MA  01887.
