Frederick C. Ryan

November 7th, 2017

Frederick C. Ryan, age 83, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away surrounded by his loving family on November 5, 2017 at Care One in Wilmington.

Fred was born on July 24, 1934 in Boston, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Frederick L. and Margaret A. (Hickey) Ryan. Fred was raised in Medford and graduated from St. Clement High School.

Following graduation, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 17, 1954. He proudly served his country for two years and was discharged on February 16, 1956.

Fred returned home to his family in Medford after his discharge and enrolled in Merrimack College. Fred completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He also met the “love of his life”, Diane Hurd, and the couple were married on May 12, 1962. Fred and Diane settled in Wilmington in 1963, where they raised their five children; Catherine, Tricia, Anne, Fred and Jennifer. They spent 51 loving years together before Diane’s passing in 2013.

Fred worked for the Federal Government’s General Services Administration in Boston for 30 years as the Director of Labor Relations. He was elected to the Board of Directors for Hanscom Federal Credit Union and served for over 30 years in several capacities. He was recently recognized for his work on the Social Responsibility Committee, where he organized donations efforts for several charities including Children’s Hospital in Boston.

In his spare time, Fred loved to keep active; he played tennis with Diane and their friends of the “Hathaway gang” almost every weekend. He also was very supportive of the Wilmington Figure Skating Club. He spent countless hours preparing scenes for the figure skating shows. Fred also took every opportunity to coach his children’s sports; almost never missing a game or practice. When Fred became a grandfather, he took great joy in watching the grandchildren’s sporting events; he was their biggest fan.

Fred will be missed by so many. He had a way of making a lasting impact on people with his genuine kindness and caring for others whether you knew him for years or for a moment.

Fred was the beloved husband of the late Diane N. (Hurd) Ryan, devoted father of Catherine Copp & her husband Steve of Wilmington, Tricia Ryan & her husband Russ of North Andover, Anne MacEachern & her husband Joe of Londonderry, NH, Fred Ryan & his wife Kate and Jennifer Ryan & her husband Bill Engstrom all of Wilmington, loving “Papa” of Alexandra, Zachary, Dylan, Dayna, Shane, Kyle, Ava, Conor, Donovan, Julia and Levi, cherished son of the late Frederick L. and Margaret A. (Hickey) Ryan, dear brother of Marie Crouse of Wakefield. Fred is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and his extended Hathaway Acres and Medford “gang” family.
