George E. Gates, age 86, of Barrington, NH, formerly of Wilmington, MA, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010.

Born on January 9, 1924, in Wilmington, MA, George was the dear son of the late Clifford P. and Hilda M. (Mawson) Gates. George was a long-time Wilmington resident and graduate of Wilmington High School. He was inducted into the United States Merchant Marines during World War II, George was aboard many vessels and received many commendations for his service to the country. He was honorably discharged on May 9, 1945.

Prior to retiring, George worked for the Wilmington School Department for many years.

In his spare time George loved to “tinker” and was a real “outdoorsman”, he enjoyed cutting wood and doing any project that related to the outdoors.

George will be fondly remembered as a devoted and giving person who was always there for his family, friends, and the many charities he contributed to over the years.

George was well loved and will be greatly missed.

George was the beloved husband of the late Harriet Gates, devoted father of Thomas D. Gates of Barrington, NH, Robert J. Gates and his wife Jeanne of Strafford, NH, and Stephanie Proll and her husband Stephen of Lowell, ME, loving grandfather of Heather Baker of Strafford, NH, dear brother of the late Dorothy Croke and Barbara Adams.

Graveside services with Military Honors were held on Saturday, September 25th at 12:00 noon in Wildwood Cemetery, Wildwood Street, Wilmington.

Memorial donations in George’s name may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice. Arrangements under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., Wilmington.

    We send our sympathys to the Gates family and friends. George was a neighbor or mine sincei i grew up in Wilmington and I wasnt able to attend but my prayers are with the family and hope that God is with each and everyone that loved him and I will miss him so much. I am sorry I couldn’t get up there in time to see him as I was planning a trip in October 2010 If any of the family will please contact me at PO box 273 Demopolis Al 36786 as I have been trying to contact the family on facebook without any luck.
