George D. “Swede” McGondel, Sr.

George D. “Swede” McGondel, Sr., age 85, of Wilmington, passed away on March 10, 2015, at the Winchester Hospital.

George was born on February 9, 1930, in Woburn; he was the cherished son of the late Charles E. and Sarah J. (Connolly) McGondel of Woburn, MA. George was raised in Woburn; he attended the St. Charles School and went on to attend Woburn High School from which he graduated in 1947.

After graduation and with the permission from his parents, George joined the US Army Air Force at the age of seventeen. George enlisted on July 22, 1947 in Winthrop. During his service, he worked as an aircraft mechanic. After several years of faithful service, George was discharged on July 21, 1950 at McChord AFB in Washington.

After being honorably discharged from the military, George met and later married his wife, Grace C. (Lascelles) McGondel. The couple went on to settle in Wilmington in 1953 where they raised their six children; George, Carol, Deborah, Grace, Susan and Lorraine.

George was a hard worker; he owned his own business, George McGondel Plumbing and Heating. George was dedicated to his job and earned the respect of all the customers he served. Prior to retiring, George also worked as a hospital engineer for the EN Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford.

George loved sports; in high school, George was the Cross Country Team captain. He was a huge Red Sox fan and loved to sit and watch countless games on T.V. In his spare time, George enjoyed spending time outdoors; he was an avid gardener.

George was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

George was the beloved husband of 63 years of Grace C. (Lascelles) McGondel, devoted father of George D. McGondel, Jr. & his wife Jean of Haverhill, Carol A. Doucette & her husband Ronald of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Deborah M. Anderson & her husband Roy of Wilmington, Grace Pilvelatis & her husband John of Billerica, Susan Schultz of Amesbury and Lorraine M. Dalton & her husband Donald of Granger, IN, loving grandfather of Kerry (Anderson) Meisinger & her husband Kevin of Roslindale, Kurt Anderson of Wilmington, Elizabeth (McGondel) Arlen & her husband Darrell of Henniker, NH, Stephanie Anderson and her fiance Jason Becotte of Methuen, Gregory McGondel & his wife Elise of Hampton, NH, Matthew Doucette & his wife Kristin of Goffstown, NH, Michael Doucette of Waltham, Stephen Natoli & his wife Kathleen of Groton, CT, Christopher Doucette of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Nicholas Doucette & his fiance Amy Sturgeon of South Portland, ME, David Pilvelatis of Billerica, Rebecca Schultz of Wilmington and the late Justin Anderson, great-grandfather of Joshua, Lucas and Zachary Arlen, Cora Grace McGondel, Zachary, Cole and Liam Natoli and the late Susannah Grace Arlen, cherished son of the late Charles E. and Sarah J. (Connolly) McGondel, Sr., dear brother of Margaret Flannigan & her late husband Francis of Wilmington and the late Charles E. McGondel, Jr. & his wife Rita, Bartholomew J. McGondel & his wife Mary, John F. McGondel & his wife Kathleen, William H. McGondel and Lawrence R. McGondel. George is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Elsie McGondel of Reading and Janet Manuel of Wilmington, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave, (Rt. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, March 14th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors to follow in Wildwood Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, March 13th, from 4-8 p.m. Memorial donations in GeorgeĆ¢??s name can be made to St. Jude Children’??s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Shriner’??s Hospital for Children, c/o Office of Development, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
