Gertrude M. (Downing) Boudreau

Gertrude M. (Downing) Boudreau, age 92, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away suddenly on October 24, 2013, at the Winchester Hospital.

Gert was born at home in Wilmington on December 10, 1920, she was the cherished only child to Ernest H. and Katherine H. (White) Downing.  Gert was educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1940. 

Gert married the “love of her life” Arthur J. Boudreau, Sr. on June 15, 1941, the couple shared more than 62 years of marriage, they raised a beautiful family, and created countless memories to share with generations to come before Arthur’s passing nearly 10 years ago.

Gert loved her family unconditionally; she was very devoted and supportive of her husband during his time as Chief of the Wilmington Fire Department.  Gert was a very dedicated mother and a loving grandmother to three generations of grandchildren.  Gert enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends throughout the holidays; she always enjoyed getting everyone together.  Gert was a talented cake decorator who made countless “special” cakes for family and friends throughout the years.

Gert also had a talent for sewing and gardening and she grew beautiful flowers all over her yard.

Gert will be fondly remembered for her love of animals, especially her dogs.

Gert was very kind, caring and loving; she was a woman of great faith and was an active communicant of St. Thomas of Villanova Church for many years.  Gert was a great presence in the life of her family, extended family, and her many friends who will miss her dearly.

Gertrude was the beloved wife of the late Retired Wilmington Fire Chief Arthur J. Boudreau, Sr., devoted mother of Arthur J. Boudreau, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Vermont and Arlene G. Carfagno and her husband Philip of Tewksbury, loving “Garnie” of Arthur J. Boudreau III, Glenn Boudreau, Matthew Boudreau, James Carfagno, Lisa Gibeault, and Michael Carfagno, “Great-Garnie” of Belit, David, Kristin, Emalee, Erica, Alycia, Cara,  and “Great-Great-Garnie” of 3.  Cherished daughter of the late Ernest H. and Katherine H. (White) Downing, Gert is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, October 28th at 9:00 a.m.  followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.  Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday, October 27th from 2-6 p.m.  Memorial donations in Gertrude’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Ave., Suite 6, Waltham, MA  02451 or to the Joslin Diabetes Center, Attn:  Development Office, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA  02215.
