Helen (Ellsworth) Downs

Helen M. (Ellsworth) Downs, age 84, a life-long resident of Wilmington, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on October 25, 2014.

Helen was born on June 25, 1930, in Wilmington, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Helen A. (Taylor) Ellsworth and Walter Ellsworth. Helen was raised and educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1947.

Helen married her beloved husband and best friend Forrest G. Downs on June 6, 1951; Helen and Forrest shared more than 63 years together and raised a wonderful family. Helen put her family first; she always showered them with unconditional love and support throughout the years.

Helen spent many years attending her children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events; she was always there to show support and cheer them on. Helen also prepared countless family holidays and special celebrations; she just loved having her family around her.

For many years Helen worked as a traffic supervisor and a crossing guard for the Wilmington Police Department and for more than 20 years she enjoyed her job at Lucci’s Market in Wilmington. Helen’s great work ethic and her wonderful personality always made her a pleasure to be around.

In her spare time Helen enjoyed bowling, doing her word search puzzles, and she never passed up a good game of bingo. Helen also loved to crochet; with her many talents she created beautiful gifts that she shared with her family and friends. Helen also took the time to crochet something special for every grandchild and great-grandchild at Christmas time.

Helen will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and a true friend to many. Helen had a wonderful personality, she was very friendly and kind to others and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Helen was the beloved wife of Forrest G. “Brownie” “Ned” Downs, devoted mother of Cynthia Ronan & her husband Kevin of Tewksbury, Clifford Downs & his wife Janice of Derry, NH, Carolynn Morrison & her husband John of Wilmington, Glenn Downs of Wilmington, and Terri Higgins & her husband John of Newbury, NH, loving “Gram” of Kevin Ronan and Kim D’Agostino, Katie and Chris Wright, Kelli and Dennis Estabrook, Keith Ronan, Kurt Ronan, Cliff and Emily Downs, Amy and Brad Huot, Angela and Sean Hyde, Ethan Downs, Nathan Downs, Christina and Mike Day, Joey Downs, Billy Downs, Sean Higgins, and Shannon Higgins, special “Gigi” of Kaliegh, Emily, Jack, Max, Carter, Andrew, Cameron, Logan, Julia, Alivia, Declan, Tyler, Haleigh, Kylie, Brooklyn, Mikayla, Ryan, Arianna, Ryan, and Kaitlin, daughter of the late Helen (Taylor) and Walter Ellsworth, sister of the late Marilyn Lynch, Charles Ellsworth, Walter Ellsworth, and Ruth Lee. Helen is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Tuesday, October 28th from 4-8 p.m. Helen’s Funeral Service will be held at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington on Wednesday, October 29th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Memorial donations in Helen’s name may be made to the New England Office of the American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St., 2nd Floor, Framingham, MA 01701 or to a Charity Of Your Choice.

She was the nicest person, when I first went to Taplin Ave as a child more than 50 years ago; she made me feel at home and as time progress our families became family.
