Hickey, Ethan

April 20th, 2009

hickey-ethanEthan Patrick Fox Hickey, age 10, of Woburn, and formerly of Malden, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2009, at home surrounded by his family.

September 2, 1998 was the day we became blessed with the birth of Ethan; he was the cherished son of Barbara (Lore) Hickey and Mark Hickey. A tiny little miracle, born premature, yet strong and full of fight. From the beginning of his life he was faced with health problems. However, he thrived as a child, enjoying Preschool at Rockland Montessori School in Malden. Ethan then went on to kindergarten at the Ferryway School in Malden. It was then Ethan was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Though the odds of survival were against him, and he had many bumps along the way through treatment, he soared through to recovery and remission, playing baseball for Malden Little League, attending school, and just wanting to be a normal child. In April of 2007 Ethan became ill and was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

Shortly after this, on Ethan’s birthday September 2, 2007, we moved to Woburn. Ethan began school at the Altavesta Elementary School and on a regular basis attended the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn, where Ethan and his four brothers Cory, Shane, Nick and Markie were embraced and supported. Ethan played baseball for Woburn Little League. No matter where Ethan went he always touched the lives of those he met along the way.

Ethan received all his treatment at the Mass General Pediatric HEME oncology Clinic with the support and love of all the staff. In October of 2008 Ethan’s Lymphoma relapsed with the only hope for a cure being a bone marrow transplant. Although we moved as quickly as we could to plan the procedure, Ethan developed a brain tumor in January of 2009. Further testing revealed that he had yet a third cancer, Adenocarcinoma. We were faced with the knowledge that there were no options for further treatment.

Ethan’s last wish was to go to Fenway Park and see a Red Sox game. Thanks to our wonderful friends at Mass General and Walsh Construction Company, this wish come true on April 8, 2009. We enjoyed our last family outing, and a beautiful one at that. What can a Mother say, when she loses her son? What words, what thoughts, what memories are most important at a time like this? How does a Mother sum up her son’s short life?

When I look at Ethan, when I think of Ethan, I realize what a special gift he was from Heaven. He taught life lessons  to all of us around him and displayed courage and strength to rise above the obstacles in his life. He did all this with style, grace and dignity. Even in Ethan’s last days he had his amazing smile, his manners and the ability to make us laugh. Ethan will be forever in all our hearts and will be remembered for the love and passion he had for life and wanting to just be a kid, despite it all. His smile brightened the day and lifted our hearts. We are so proud of him and are blessed to be touched by this little angel. I am so proud to be Ethan’s mom, it is an honor and he is my hero.

Ethan is survived by his beloved parents Barbara (Lore) Hickey of Woburn and Mark Hickey of Mansfield. He was the step-son of Shawn Daly and Theresa Hickey, loving brother of Cory, Shane, Nickolas, Markie, J. C., Matthew, Eric, and the late Devin, dear grandson of Barbara & Leo Lore of Canton, Robert & the late Catherine “Kay” Hickey of Charlestown, George & Mary Iannuzzo of Tewksbury, and Gary & Wendy Hennessey, special godson of Lisa Marie (Lore) Lambert & Robert Hickey. Ethan is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, good friends, & his loving and supportive community of Woburn.

Family & Friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, April 25th at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Church, 80 Elm St. (Rte. 38) Woburn. Interment Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Visiting hours Friday, April 24th from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m.

Memorial donations in Ethan’s name may be made to Woburn Boys & Girls Club/Mass. General Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Clinic, c/o Ethan Hickey Fund, Everett Co-Operative Bank, 417 Br oadway, Everett, MA 02149.

  4. Kelle Sutliff says:

    Barbara and Family,
Here is an example of what Ethan did for my family. When I saw your feature story in the Globe four years ago. It was lent and I wanted to show my kids the acts of doing going deeds. They were little and we sent off some Target gift certificates to your boys for being “good kids” and supporting their brother. I researched called the principal at their school and sent them off in her care to you. Fast forward three months later, I got the most beautiful letter from”Mom to Mom” about kids and cancer. At the time when I got that letter, my Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 melenoma and not expected to live, but a few months. That letter put into perspective, his challenges and we shared those words together. From there on out, we became”pen pals”, never meeting, just communicating by Christmas cards or notes. My Kids would always ask how Ethan was doing? Or see him in a card. Well last year, we finally met in person at Ethan’s fundraiser. It was great joy, I had to meet this little boy, you and all your family. He was darling and not missing a beat that evening. The best kind of medicine. Through this one article about a courageous family battling cancer, I have met such nice friends of yours, a lovely family and my own children have learned the beauty of giving to others and how that can change peoples lives, mostly our own.

My the spirit of life give you and your family great rewards and know that your “Big Man” Ethan gave many rewards to many.

  5. Mrs. Christy Nickerson says:

Over the past several weeks you have all been in my thoughts and prayers daily. All of us at the school loved Ethan dearly and we will sorely miss him. It was no surprise to me that Ethan was so strong and fought for so long, I see that strength shine through in the entire family. You all have been amazing throughout Ethan’s illness. Your strength and love is what I believe helped Ethan stay strong and positive throughout his fight. I pray now that you are able use that strength, and the beautiful memories of your son and brother to help heal the ache that you must feel after losing such an amazing person. Last week Markie told me that he knows that Ethan will always be with him in his heart, and that he will always be an angel looking out for him and his brothers. No bigger truth has ever been spoken! All my love to you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help any of you get through the difficult days ahead.

  9. Lisa Juliano says:

    To Ethan’s family,
Words seem so inadequate to express the sadness I feel. Ethan had a part of all our hearts at the Altavesta. I have a happy memory of Ethan skipping down the hall at school last year with a big smile on his face. He was so excited to see the first snowflakes of the season. It is difficult to say goodbye to a child. I’m sure even Jesus had a tear in his eye when he called Ethan home. I hope you take comfort in knowing you have an angel watching you and forever smiling at snowflakes.
