Howe, Martha

July 19th, 2010

Mrs. Martha Lydia (Field) Howe, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2010, at the age of 90.

Martha Field was born in her family home on Lake Street on March 2, 1920, she was the dear daughter of the late Frederick A. and Lydia E. (Younie) Field.

She lived in the Silver Lake area of Wilmington her entire life and attended Wilmington Public Schools.

Martha was very proud of her heritage and she researched her family history. She found out that her family background consisted of miners and clock makers from Cornwall, England during the 19th Century and farmers in Maine.

She married Chester C. Howe on March 9, 1939, they celebrated 54 years of marriage before his passing in November of 1993. Together Martha and Chester raised their seven children, Martha always had an “open door” policy for family and friends, everyone was always welcome. Martha loved to cook and there was always a dinner table set and ready as well as a refrigerator full of leftovers to be shared with who ever dropped in.

In her spare time, Martha was an avid reader, finishing a book or two a week all her life. She enjoyed romance novels, mysteries, spy books, and biographies.

Martha was also a very generous person, she continuously gave to charities like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the various Veterans Organizations, even when she didn’t have much to spare she always made sure she contributed. As her family grew and came upon difficulties she expanded her charities to include organizations that had helped family members such as Cancer Society, Heart and Lung Associations, and Cystic Fibrosis. She never forgot to donate and was grateful to those who helped her family in the past.

Martha will be fondly remembered for her generosity, her kind and caring ways, and for her devotion to her family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and surrogate to many. She will be greatly missed.
