Jane M. (Bird) Leary, age 83, of Wilmington, formerly of Medford, passed away on October 29, 2016. Born on January 11, 1933, at home in Medford, Jane was the beloved daughter of Frank and Rose Ann (Gilfedder) Bird. Jane was raised in Medford and attended school there. She completed two years of business school and worked for many years as a secretary in the equal opportunity employment division of Hanscom Air Force Base.
Jane married the love of her life, Eugene, in 1952. They lived in Medford for many years before relocating to Wilmington. Together, they raised their three children, Kathleen, Karen and Joseph. Jane was an avid reader, a trait that she instilled in her children. Volunteer work was a passion of Jane’s. She served as a literacy volunteer throughout the Merrimack Valley. She was also very involved in volunteering at St. Dorothy’s Church. Jane taught CCD for many years at the church, served in the Lady Sodality group, and she devoted time to the FISH program which would provide transportation to those going to appointments. She was a caring and compassionate woman who put the needs of others before her own and will be missed by her family and friends.
Jane was the cherished wife of 64 years of Eugene J. Leary of Wilmington. She was the devoted mother of Kathleen Cote & her husband the late Paul of Methuen, Karen Brodigan & her husband Michael of Canton and Joseph Leary & his wife Julie of Wilmington. Jane was the loving “Nana” of Timothy Cote, Jeffrey Cote, Patrick Brodigan & his wife Caroline, Megan Hart & her husband Dr. John Hart, Dennis Brodigan & his wife Katelynn, Ryan Leary, Connor Leary, Sophie Smith and Chloe Smith. She was “Nana Jane” of 5 great-grandchildren. Jane is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Wednesday, November 2nd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 1st from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
