JoEllyn (Ryan) Sullivan

JoEllyn Sullivan (Ryan), age 62, of Wilmington, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 18, 2017.

JoEllyn was born on July 20, 1954, in Chelsea, MA; she was the daughter of James and Carolyn Ryan. JoEllyn was raised and educated in Cambridge, MA and was a graduate of North Cambridge Catholic High School. JoEllyn went on to further her education at Mount Auburn School of Nursing; earning her degree as a Registered Nurse.

JoEllyn went to work at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge over 40 years ago; she was an excellent nurse who always put her patients care first and foremost. JoEllyn had a great personality and wonderful bedside manor; she made her patients as well as their families very comfortable while they were in her care. JoEllyn also made countless friends with her co-workers throughout her career; she considered them her extended family.

In 1977, JoEllyn married her “best friend” John “Jay” Sullivan; they moved to Wilmington in 1985 and had three beautiful children; Kerri, Jay Jay, and Katie. JoEllyn was a wonderful wife and mother who loved her family with all her heart; they were her world. JoEllyn treasured the time she spent with family; whether it was traveling, going to the beach, or taking in a Red Sox game she enjoyed every minute she spent with family, extended family, and friends. In her spare time, JoEllyn also enjoyed reading a good book and relaxing at home.

JoEllyn will be fondly remembered for her kindness and compassion towards others; she had a great sense of humor and loved to have fun. She was quite a lady who will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.

JoEllyn was the beloved wife of John “Jay” Sullivan, devoted mother of Kerri Burke & her husband Bryon, Katie Sullivan and the late Jay Jay Sullivan all of Wilmington. Loving “Nan” of Aidan and Gavin Burke, dear daughter of Carolyn (Quinlan) Ryan and the late James E. Ryan of Hanover (formerly of Cambridge), sister of Caryl O’Brien of North Reading, Jean Ryan of East Bridgewater, Janet O’Connor of Wilmington and James Ryan of Hanover. JoEllyn is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, May 23rd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, May 22nd from 4:00-8:00 p.m.

    Carolyn, Mom & I send our deepest Sympathy to you all at this most difficult time. I prayed that JoEllyn would recover & if that was not God’s will that he at least gave her strength, & comfort to take her journey home. We have many happy memories as we look back at our times in Corcoran Park. Mom sends her love & sorry she is not able to make the services for JoEllyn. Our thoughts, prayers & love are with you all & hope you find comfort in knowing she is at peace now & no longer suffering. May she rest in peace.

    My heartfelt sympathy to all of JoEllyn’s family. I met JoEllyn when I worked at Mount Auburn Hospital where we often shared out love of cruises and would talk about who was going where next. I loved our conversations and will always remember her zest for life. May her memory live deep in your heart as it will in mine.
