  9. Darryl Grant says:

Sincere condolences to the entire Meeker family. Like a lot of Wilmington kids, I played Pony League baseball for three years under Jack and he was far and away the best coach I ever had. I’ll never forget Sunday morning practices at the North Intermediate, Mr. Meeker parked in his Monza, always the first one there. He’d have his Bike athletic shorts on and cleats with no socks. Coffee in one hand, fungo bat in the other, hitting 300-foot flyballs with his one free hand.

He had an amazing way about him, gruff without ever being mean. Stern, but paternal. I loved every second of those three years playing “Meeker Ball” and think about them often. I can still hear his unmistakable voice barking out his most frequent commands: “Get the batter!” “Hit the FYP and back.” “Get your @ss down, boy!”

It was a real privilege to play for you, Jack. Thanks for all the squeeze plays, all the great memories, and for being the perfect coach for a kid like me. You’ll be sorely missed.
