John H. Crooker

John H. Crooker, age 90, of Wilmington, formerly a long-time resident of Reading, passed away on April 1, 2015.

John was born on July 2, 1924 in Winchester; he was the cherished son of the late Elmer Percy and Ethel M. (Howe) Crooker. John was raised in Reading and graduated from Reading High School with the Class of 1942.

Following his graduation from high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. on July 27, 1942 in Boston. He proudly served his country in the South Pacific with the 1st Marine Division during WWII. After more than two years, John was honorably discharged on December 14, 1945 in Bainbridge, MD.

John returned home to marry his high school “sweetheart,” Elizabeth D. (Burpee) Crooker. John and Elizabeth were voted class couple in Reading in 1942. The couple settled in Reading where they raised their three children; Ronald, Diane and Joan.

John had a great work ethic; he was the district manager for Commercial Union Insurance Company for many years. He was well-respected within his industry and following many dedicated years of work; John retired.

In his spare time, John was a talented craftsman. He was able to repair or create many pieces of furniture in his lifetime.

John was very involved in his community. He served on the Reading Municipal Light Board for several years. John’s intelligence and insight proved to be a strong asset to the company. John was also a life-long Mason. He belonged to the Friendship Lodge in Portland, Maine.

John was a man of great faith; he was a member of the Old South Methodist Church in Reading. He attended Services there regularly and was well liked by his fellow parishioners.

John was an honest and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was a wonderful provider and teacher. His family was most important to him and he will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

John was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth D. (Burpee) Crooker, devoted father of Ronald H. Crooker & his wife Suzanne of Wilmington, Diane C. Neill & her husband John C. of Southampton, NY and Joan E. Crooker & her partner John A. Redding of Carlisle, loving “Grandpa” of Laura Jane Neill and Elizabeth Joan Neill, cherished son of the late Elmer P. and Ethel M. (Howe) Crooker. John is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and his long-time friend Margie Batchelder.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, April 11th from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon and will be concluded with Military Honors. Interment will be private. Memorial donations in John’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or to the Old South Methodist Church, 6 Salem St, Reading, MA 01867.
