John W. “Bill” McCann

John W. McCann, “Bill”, age 89, a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born in Bangor, Maine on March 9, 1931; he was the son of the late Donald McCann and Mary (Jamieson) Oates. Bill was raised in Bangor by his beloved grandparents, Paul and Laura Sussenbach; he was an avid athlete and a football star in high school as well as college. Bill graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maine. Bill furthered his education at Boston University Law School where he got his Juris Doctorate in Law.

Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. in June of 1954, during the Korean War and served actively and honorably until June of 1956.

Bill married “the love of his life and best friend” Maryann Ludski in 1960; the couple raised their family in Wilmington. Bill and Maryann were very devoted parents and were always there to support their children.

Bill began his career as a lawyer at Travelers Insurance Company before becoming a partner at the law firm of Madan & Madan.

In his spare time, Bill enjoyed traveling with Maryann to Las Vegas and Foxwoods, just to “try their luck”. He was also a huge sports fan who enjoyed following the New York Yankees and his beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Bill will be fondly remembered as a “great guy”; he was quiet and unassuming but would do anything to help anyone. He loved his family with all his heart and deeply missed his beloved Maryann who passed in 2004. Bill will forever be in the hearts of those he loved.

Bill was the beloved husband of the late Maryann McCann, devoted father of William “Bill” McCann and his wife Krystyna of Acton, Timothy McCann and his wife Julie of York, ME, Cally McCann of Wilmington, Laura Colantuoni of Wilmington and Cindy Sewall and her husband Dave of Needham. Loving “Grampy” of Timmy, Danny, Taylor, MacKenzie, Elisha, Kerri, Dalton, Garrett, Alanah, Alyson, Nick and Joss. Bill was one of several siblings and is survived by his brother Timothy Oates of North Carolina, his sister Duska of Florida, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Due to the current situation of the corona virus and for everyone’s safety, the McCann family has decided to have a private service at this time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Wilmington, MA.

    Uncle Billy was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. I will never forget the fun times we had with the family. When I think of him I always think of your Mom too.
