Lawrence R. McGondel, Sr.

Lawrence R. McGondel, Sr., age 73, of Andover, MA. formerly of Woburn, MA, passed away peacefully on December 19th  2012, at the Mary Immaculate Nursing Center in Lawrence  following a brief battle with cancer. 

Larry was born on May 16, 1939 in Woburn, MA. He was the beloved seventh child of Charles Edward and Sarah Jannette (Connolly) McGondel. Larry grew up in Wilmington and moved to Woburn where he graduated from Woburn High School in 1958. Prior to retiring Larry was a master plumber by trade. He worked many years in his own plumbing business. He was also a member of the National Guard for seven years. After retiring Larry played an active role in helping to raise his grandchildren. They will never forget all the fond memories they had with him during those years. 

Larry married Janet Manuel on June 3, 1961, together they shared 26 years of marriage, raised four beautiful children and each shared the joy of being grandparents to six grandchildren.

Larry will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family. He loved his wife and children dearly and was an extremely “Proud Papa” to his grandchildren who will miss him dearly.

Larry loved attending the kids and grandkids dance recitals, baton competitions, baseball games and other important events throughout their childhood.  

Larry enjoyed fishing, following the local sports teams, watching his favorite television shows (especially the soap operas) and playing the lottery. His family and friends will always remember the entertaining conversations he shared with him. 

Two of Larry’s favorite trips were when he took his children on their first trip to Disney World in Florida and when he went to Las Vegas for the first time. 

Larry’s family will remember him as a generous man who had a heart of gold one who would give you the shirt of his back if you wanted it. 

Larry was the devoted father of Pamela Streletsky and her husband Paul of Haverhill, MA, Sandra Pelleriti and Steven Lundin of Billerica, MA, Janet Leblanc and her husband Michael of Tewksbury, MA. and Lawrence and his wife Jessica of Portsmouth, NH.  Loving “Papa” to Samantha, Sara, Jenna and Michelle Streletsky and Michael and Brian Pelleriti.  He is also survived by his former wife, Janet Manuel of Wilmington, MA as well as several nieces and nephews.  

Larry is also survived by his brother George and his wife Grace of Wilmington, MA, sister, Margaret “Peggy” Flannigan of Wilmington, MA, and sister-in-law, Elsie McGondel of Reading, MA. Lawrence is preceded in death by his brothers Charles, Bartholomew, John, and William.   

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave, (Rte 62) Wilmington, MA, Saturday, December 22, at 9 am followed by a funeral mass celebrated at St. Dorothy’s  Church, Main St (Rt 38), Wilmington, MA., at 10am.  Services will conclude with burial at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.  Visiting hours at Nichols Funeral Home will be held on Friday December 21st, from 4-8pm.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to Mary Immaculate Nursing and Restorative Center, 172 Lawrence St. Lawrence, MA. 01841.

The family would also like to express their gratitude to the staff at Mary Immaculate Nursing Center and Merrimack Valley Hospice for the wonderful care that their father received during his last months.
