Lee M. Rogers

June 17th, 2021

Lee M. Rogers (Ratsey), age 84, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

Lee was born in Somerville, MA on January 8, 1937; she was the dear daughter of the late Louis and Jane Ratsey. Lee was raised and educated in Medford, MA and a graduate of Medford High School with the Class of 1954. Following graduation, Lee went to work for the State Street Bank in Boston where she learned a lot about banking and bookkeeping and made a lot of friends throughout those years.

Lee married and moved to Wilmington in 1963; settling in the North Wilmington area where she raised her beautiful family. Lee was a very devoted mother; her children were her world and she supported them unconditionally in everything they did. Lee was always present at every school event, sporting event and every activity that they were involved in; she was their biggest cheerleader. When Lee became a “Nana” and “Great Nana” the traditions continued as she went to countless school and sporting events, dance recitals, birthday parties, graduations and special events. Lee also looked forward to family vacations, holidays, cookouts or any other reason to bring “her gang” together; she loved the time spent with family, they had a lot of fun and made countless memories together.

Lee was a “social butterfly” who loved people, made friends wherever she went and would go out of her way to help others in need. Throughout the years she would drive various friends to doctors appointments, shopping excursions or give them a ride wherever they need to be; she was always such dependable and reliable friend.

Lee looked forward to her trips to the casinos, especially Foxwoods where she would go with her friends or the Wilmington Rec. Department just to “try her luck”. Lee also enjoyed the many trips she took with the Wilmington Rec. Department, her friends or her family to Italy, Greece, Ireland, Aruba and her all-time favorite trip was to Alaska where she was really taken with the beautiful scenery.

Lee loved her weekly games of bowling; she belonged to several leagues throughout the years and was known to have a competitive streak which was all in great fun. Lee also had her weekly Saturday evening routine with her girlfriends where they would attend 5:30 Mass at St. Thomas Church and on to Rocco’s Restaurant for dinner and more socializing.

Prior to her illness, Lee was always out and about; she never wanted to waste a minute and lived life to the fullest with her family and friends. Lee was very good to everyone she met, she was helpful, thoughtful and friendly. Lee was “one of a kind” and will forever be in the hearts of those she loved.

Lee was the beloved mother of Michael Rogers & his wife Laura of Gloucester, Paula Sughrue & her husband Tim of Wilmington, Gregory Rogers of Rockport and Lisa Wright & her husband Stephen of Wilmington. Loving “Nana” of Michelle and Kevin Rogers, Katelyn McManus & her husband Justin, Timmy Sughrue, Jr. & his wife Lauren, Stephen Sughrue & his wife Samantha, Olivia, Nicole, Ben, Matthew and Rachel Wright as well as her Great-Grandchildren Andrew, Nora, Aiden, Shay, Halle, Carter and Emma. Cherished daughter of the late Louis and Jane (Dooley) Ratsey, dear sister of Ann O’Neil & her late husband Charles of Danvers. Lee is further survived by her nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, June 21st from 4:00-8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial for Lee will take place on Tuesday, June 22nd at 10:00 a.m. in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Lee’s memory to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 or to the Epilepsy Foundation of New England, 1 Dunham Road #200, Billerica, MA 01821.

Ma Lee was the best. ‘it takes a village to raise a child”. Lee was one of the most beloved leaders of our village of Wilmington kids. She hosted us not just with endless snacks and meals, but was a stable presence of love, support, and fun. I think of her and can only picture her smiling and laughing. She meant so much to so many of us, hence the nickname “Ma Lee”. Her sense of humor, kindness, and joie de vie will live on through her wonderful kids who are apples from the tree for sure. Thankful to have known her. Prayers to her extended family. ??
