May 25th, 2019

Margaret Ann “Peggy” Kane, age 71, a long-time Wilmington resident, passed away on May 22, 2019.

Peggy was born on June 3, 1947 in Weymouth, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Leonard T. and Norma G. (Walsh) MacDonnell. Peggy grew up in Nahant and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lynn.

Following graduation, Peggy went to Emmanuel College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Education. She then went on to receive her master’s degree in Education from Salem State College.

Peggy spent over 35 years as an English Teacher at Medford High School, before retiring. She was devoted to her job; Peggy made many friends with her co-workers and special bonds with her students.

Peggy married the late Dennis M. Kane on November 21, 1972. They moved to Wilmington where they raised their three children, Stacey, Catherine and Andrew.

Peggy was very involved in the Wilmington community; she served on the Wilmington School Committee for eighteen years and appointed Chairperson of the School Committee from 2007 – 2016. Peggy’s consistent dedication to the Town of Wilmington school system was recognized this past fall when she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mass. Association of School Committees. Due to her health issues, Peggy had to step down from the School Committee last year.

Peggy’s involvement in the town continued to the Wilmington Library where Peggy served as President of Friends of the Wilmington Library from 2009 -2018. She could also be found volunteering at the Book Store Next Door.

Peggy was a member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church. She enjoyed participating in the Church events and “Ruth’s Circle,” a women’s group in the Church. Peggy was involved in the Wilmington Senior Center, and many town book clubs.

In her spare time, Peggy loved to socialize; she was a true “social butterfly.” She loved to spend time with the friends she made in her circles. They included her Fun Club, Bridge Club, her St. Mary’s high school friends, her Medford teacher’s friends all of who she continued to keep in touch with and meet up regularly. She and her life-long best friend, Carroll Burns, shared many special memories, laughs, and trips over the years.

Peggy was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. Her selfless devotion to her family, school and town will never be forgotten.

  10. Dave Ryan says:

To laugh often and much: To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.
    ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
