Maria “Jean” Smith

Maria Jean (Devlin) Smith, of Wilmington, fondly known as Jean to her family and friends, died peacefully on February 4, 2013, she was 86 years old.

Jean was born in Brighton, MA, on December 20, 1926, she was the dear daughter of the late John T. and Mary Elizabeth (Cummings) Devlin. She was raised in the Auburndale section of Newton and was a graduate of Newton High School.

Jean married Gilbert Smith on March 24, 1945, sharing more than 62 years of marriage and raising five children before his passing in 2007.  Jean and Gilbert moved to Hancock, New Hampshire where they enjoyed living on a non-working farm for 18 years.

In 1964, Jean and Gilbert moved to Wilmington where they resided for over 40 years. Family was first and foremost to Jean, she was a devoted wife and mother, kind, caring, and supportive, and her love for her family was unconditional. Jean cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, They were the light of her life.

In her spare time, Jean enjoyed going for long walks with her best friend, Charlotte Stewart, spending time in her garden and going to the Wilmington Senior Center. She was also a member of the Wilmington Garden Club, a voracious reader, a talented seamstress, and loved quilting, knitting and many other arts and crafts, creating many gifts or donations for craft fairs.

Jean was truly quite a lady who had a great sense of humor and a big heart. She will be greatly missed.

Jean was the beloved wife of the late Gilbert Smith, devoted mother of David Smith of Wakefield, Deborah Whitworth & her husband Jon of Pelham, NH, Pamela Smith & Ed Belekewicz of North Providence, RI, Gary Smith & his wife Marie of Chelmsford, and Kristine Smith of Billerica, loving “Nana” of Christopher Smith & his wife Jennifer, Alexa Baker & her husband Johnathan, Kerry Smith, Tracie Hatt & her husband Christopher, Tania Whitworth & her fiance Tim Poplar, Kelly Smith, Leanne Smith, and great-grandchildren Quinn Smith, Sean Baker, Jacob and Alissa Hatt, and Trista Poplar, dear sister of the late June Colantuono, Leonard Devlin, and Thomas Devlin. Jean is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, for Visiting Hours on Sunday, February 10th from 12-2 p.m. Followed followed by a Funeral Service at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Jean’s memory may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice.
