Mary I. “Mae” (Fleming) Mahoney

March 31st, 2014

Mary I. “Mae” (Fleming) Mahoney, age 94, of Wilmington, formerly of Charlestown, died peacefully on March 30, 2014.

Mae was born on March 2, 1920 in Charlestown, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late James and Mariah “Molly” (Collins) Fleming.  Mae was raised and educated in Charlestown and was a graduate of Charlestown High School.  Although Mae moved to Wilmington 66 years ago she always considered herself a “Townie’ and never forgot her roots.

Mae married the “love of her life” Francis P. Mahoney on January 24, 1942; together they shared more than 43 years of marriage and raised a beautiful family.  Mae always beamed with pride when she spoke of her family; she was very devoted to her husband and children.  Mae was a wonderful mother who’s unconditional love and support was always evident.  Mae cherished her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother; attending countless sporting and school events, dance recitals, graduations, and birthday parties over the years and enjoying every minute of it.  Mae always made her house feel like home and her doors were always open to family and friends.

Mae was a woman of great faith and an active communicant of St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington for many years.

In her spare time Mae enjoyed reading and was also very supportive of the “Friends of Wilmington Memorial Library”.

Mae will be fondly remembered for her beautiful smile, her tenacity, and for her kindness to others; she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mae was the beloved wife of the late Francis P. Mahoney, devoted mother of Francis “Frank” Mahoney, Jr. and his wife Carol of Boxford, Irene Mahoney of Wilmington, Mary Weatherbee and her husband Robert of Hudson, FL, Michael Mahoney of Newburyport, Barbara Mahoney of Windham, NH, Annmarie Mahoney of Newburyport, the late Margaret “Peggy” Graham, and Patricia “Pat” Mullen, mother-in-law of Janet Mahoney of Wilmington, James Mullen of Dracut, and Charles Graham of Tewksbury, loving Grandmother of Carolann, Marybeth, Pattiann, Michael, James, Meghan, Ryan, Sean, Brett, Ashley, Nick, Nate, and great-grandchildren Maura, James, Liam, Travis, Mariah, McKenzie, and soon to be the 7th great-grandchild.  Cherished daughter of the late James and Mariah (Collins) Fleming, Mae was the last survivor of eight siblings and the dear aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Friday, April 4th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will follow in the family lot at Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington.  Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, April 3rd from 4:00-8:00 p.m.  Memorial donations in Mary’s name may be made to the Friends of the Wilmington Memorial Library, 175 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA  01887.
