Mary T. Dillon

July 6th, 2020

Mary T. Dillon (Hopkins), age 77, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2020, at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born in Boston, MA, on June 22, 1943; she was the dear daughter of the late George and Mary Hopkins. Mary was raised and educated in Roslindale, MA.

Mary met Robert Dillon on Patriot’s Day 1963 and they were married 6 months later on December 14. Soon after, they started their family and moved to Wilmington, MA where they have had a beautiful home and life for 56 years.

Mary owned and operated a hair salon called Scissors Point where she worked along side her oldest daughter. She continued to work as a hair dresser with her good friend Cheryl Cheevers at Hair Designs for 10+ years until she retired.

Mary faced many health related obstacles in her life that she dealt with in stride and overcame them again and again. She beat cancer 3 times and survived a massive heart attack that left her in a coma for 6 weeks. She was one tough cookie.

In her retired life she spent the winters with her husband Bob in Florida, but loved coming back to her home in Wilmington for the summers to spend time with her grandchildren -where she was known as “Nana.”

Mary loved cooking dinners for her family, singing Christmas songs year round, scratching cash words lottery tickets, and going to church every Sunday.

Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, friend and Nana. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Mary was the beloved wife of Robert E. Dillon, loving mother of Mary “Teri” Brady and Wayne, Kelly Ann Dillon and Robert E. Dillon, Jr. and Leeann Fleming. Loving Nana of Katey, Russell, Jacob, Julia, Jacklyn and Jack. Cherished daughter of the late George and Mary (Cronin) Hopkins, dear sister of Joann Zambia and George Hopkins both of Braintree, the late Charles Hopkins and Donna Marie Greene. Mary is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families and her favorite neighbor Donny Morse. She was also the best friend of the late Vicki Yentile Webb.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Friday, July 10th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, July 9th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Masks are required to be worn while in the Funeral Home and in Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mary, like the rest of the Dillons, lived life on her own terms and really knew how to enjoy herself, just two of the many things I’ve always admired about her. She was a straight shooter with a warm, genuine heart and I know she will be dearly missed by all of us who loved her.

Mary T. Loved you since the day we met you. Such a pure heart and a gentle soul. Sooo many good times spent at your house. Smiling always and the twinkle in your eye. We all grew up together in some confusing times, but never lost the joy of life. There must be a great celebration in Heaven with such a lovely spirit coming home. God bless you all at this sad time. In the brief time I knew Mary and her husband I was impressed mostly by her children and her relationship with Bob, her husband. The true legacy of a persons life is that of their family. I will always cherish the memories of the time spent with them at their home in Wilmington and their cottage in Danbury, NH. That warmth will remain.
