Maureen F. McHugh

July 18th, 2019

Maureen F. McHugh (McKenna), age 80, a life-long Wilmington resident, passed away on July 17, 2019, surrounded by her family, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Maureen was born in Winchester, MA on July 26, 1938. She was raised and educated in Wilmington and was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1956. She was a talented athlete not only in high school but throughout her life. One of her proudest school accomplishments was being Regional Spelling Bee Champ.

Maureen was a hard worker. Following high school, she went to work for the Smart and Akerson Ford Company in Woburn for several years until she obtained a secretarial position with the Army Corps of Engineers. During that time, she met and married the love of her life, Richard “Bozo” McHugh, and together they had four children. Maureen chose to be a stay-at-home mom, and she was an extraordinary one. She was a very devoted and active “Nana” to her nine grandchildren. Throughout the years, Maureen attended countless school events, football games, cheerleading competitions, soccer games, softball games, lacrosse games, field hockey games, volleyball matches, and lots and lots of hockey. Whatever the grandchildren were involved in, she was their Number One Fan.

Maureen had a passion for genealogy. She traced her family roots back thirteen generations and even made a trip to Ireland to personally meet some of her relatives.

In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, playing her favorite game “Toon Blast” on her iPad, following her favorite Boston sports’ teams; especially the Bruins and Patriots, and laughing and rolling her eyes at Bozo. She looked forward to her winters in Florida and spending time at the Wilmington Senior Center where she made many friends.

Maureen will be fondly remembered for her devotion to her family and friends; especially her grandchildren whom she adored. She will forever be in the hearts of those she loved.

Maureen was the beloved wife of Richard (Bozo) McHugh Sr., devoted mother of Richard (Richie) McHugh Jr. & his wife Mimi, Thomas (Tommy) McHugh & his wife Laurie, William (Billy) McHugh & his wife Barbi, and Heather Fuller & her husband Steven all of Wilmington. Loving “Nana” of Amanda, Keith, Shannon, Shelby, Payton, Meagan, Jennifer, Paige and Patrick. Dear daughter of the late Francis and Helen (Butters) McKenna, sister of Richard (Dick) McKenna, Susan Gauthier, Terry McKenna, Robert (Bob) McKenna and the late Michael (Mickey) McKenna. Sister-in-law of Patricia (Pat) McKenna, Karen McKenna, Robert McHugh and the late Carolyn McKenna and Catherine McHugh. Maureen was also very close to her niece, Lindsey McKenna, and is further survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunt Ethel, and friends.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, July 22nd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday, July 21st from 4:00-8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Maureen’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
