Michael J. Haas

July 31st, 2017

Michael J. Haas, age 43, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 28, 2017.

Michael was born on May 20, 1974 in Winchester, MA; he was the cherished son of John W. and Donna F. (Lloyd) Haas. Michael was raised in Wilmington, attended Wilmington Schools and graduated from Wilmington High School.

Michael, known to most as simply, “Haas,” was known for his quick wit, sarcasm and unrelenting comedic sense of humor. Haas was multi-skilled in construction, as well as carpentry. From the time he was a young man, it was very clear that Haas was naturally adept in mechanical and industrial trade work. He went to work with his Dad, John, in iron work and steel erection. He brought the silly and the skill with him to the job site. This was helpful in keeping the moral of fellow co-workers high and everyone smiling.

Among his many talents, Haas was most well-known for his love of music. He co-wrote lyrics, sang and mixed songs, as well as played guitar for the group, Type 4. Type 4 toured across the country in the late 90’s. Haas never lost his love of music and spent countless hours playing his guitar. His family and friends will forever remember his licks and riffs, along with his authentic smile and contagious laugh.

Michael was the devoted father of Ariana and Kayla Haas-Breslin both of Everett and Addison Haas of Wilmington, cherished son of John W. and Donna F. (Lloyd) Haas and dear brother of Daniel J. Haas of Wilmington. Michael is survived by his partner Sharon Dalio and her son Andrew as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Friday, August 4th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations in Michael’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

  18. Pete says:

Mike…my thoughts and prayers go out to your family & friends. I haven’t seen or talked to you since I visited Wilmington ~20 years ago…that said you made an indelible mark on me in the years I did spend around you, & that positive impact carried over into my adult life.
I am shocked & very sad to hear of your passing.
I think it was 6th grade when I told Dan that I had an acoustic guitar & he told me to come by the house & meet you, because you played guitar….you busted out a slash GnR riff (sweet child o mine) on that old black with white striping on the edges, Les Paul copy; I think it was “Guild?” After, I immediately went home & begged my mom to let me trade in my acoustic for an electric, & asked her to sign me up for “electric” guitar lessons at the Wilmington guitar center.
A few months later, you came by my house to hear me play, & after you heard how bad I still was, you introduced me to Mike Turner.
I took lessons from Mike Turner all through high school, which gave me the life long gift of music, & I have been able to pass on playing guitar to one of my two kids.
You & Dan also introduced me to free styling “bike tricks” in the parking lot across from stop & go sub shop and on the quarter pipe you guys & your dad built in your side yard. I saved up my paper route money, got a haro sport…and went with You, Dan and Your parents up to Hampton Beach pavilion to enter a free style competition at the state park. You let me borrow your dad’s “giant” motor cycle helmet (cause I didn’t have my own & I couldn’t enter the competition without one), I did the only two tricks I knew, which were tricks you & Mark B taught me, “a howel spin” and “frame stand.” I did this competition to my favorite song “the ocean,” by none other than led zepplin (a band, believe it or not, that I never heard of, until you introduced them to me). We were amazed that I was able to take home a trophy for the 13yr old bracket with only the two tricks you taught me up my sleeve…& a very cool Zeplin tune, you joked that the judges just liked the song, & I was thankful you were a year and a half older and in a different competition bracket :-) .
I remember like it was yesterday when you bought your mouradian guitar (metallic blue) & gave me the phone number of the guy who sold it to you…you said he might be able to find me one too! So I contacted him, traded in my ibanez for $$$ & got a red mouradian, which I still have to this day.
After years of me trying to catch up/practice (which I never did catch up to your grove/funk talented style) we final got together with mike p, billy j, and brain a, & laid down some tracks with Mike Turner. This was a huge highlight for me to be in the same band as you…even if that particular band never made it out of my parents basement :-) .
Finally, you provided me with an example of how to stand up to people & not be intimidated…as many I’m sure remember, or at least I will never forget…when someone crossed the line with one of Haas’ family or friends, it was very much a line those people came to regret that they ever got close to.
I tried to instill that mindset I saw in You, into myself, my kids & my troops. I embraced Brazilian jiu jitsu, & although l didn’t realize it at the time, I think my desire to learn that art, & ensure my boys learned it, probably had a lot to do with my witnessing Your ability/confidence to not be intimidated by anyone…I didn’t have that confidence, but I wanted it…& wanted my kids to have it…& now we do, & it will continue to serve us well.
So in summary…from 5th grade through high school I simply “wanted to be Mike Haas.”
That may sound weird for a 42 year old man to say…but it’s true.
I took the time to share the details, because I think it is important for others to understand what an impact You had, & I only interacted with You for ~9 years, although I’m sure You didn’t realize it at the time, You helped give me elements in my life that I think everybody on earth truly seeks, & that is simply to “belong.”
Whether it be to a band, or to a group of people that simply love the same kind of music; whether you do tricks on bikes, or enjoy hanging with people at an X-games event, whether you roll Brazilian jiu jitsu or simply instill a philosophy of sticking up for those that can’t stick up for themselves…it’s all about belonging to something, that’s all folks want.
God bless you Mike…& thank you for the positive life long impacts you unknowingly provided in such a short period of time…I am confident that there are many others that feel the same as I do about you.

To Pete in the above comments. We thank you. I do not know you personally, but felt obligated to let you know, you changed our family’s services tonight. You changed it in the best way.
We had the Paster read what you wrote on this comments page, to the entire room. I hope that is ok with you. We were all hopeful that we might see you walk in & be lucky enough to have you read it. But we did not see you. That is okay, because the words you shared provided familiarity, & comfort to us. You had every bit excatly right. Your words were the impote of our Mikey. It was dead on & we appreciated that you took the time. Thank you for sharing your stories of the Mikey we all know & love. So I guess Mike left a major impact on you, but you have now left a major impact on all of us. So again, thank you, Pete. May Mikey Rest In Peace.
