Michael L. Russo

January 12th, 2015

Michael L. Russo, age 62, a life-long Wilmington resident, passed away peacefully at his home on January 11, 2015, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Woburn on September 2, 1952, Michael was one of six children of Rudolph “Rudy” and Grace Russo. Michael was raised in a large and loving family in Wilmington. He was educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1970.

Michael was married to the love of his life, Theresa, on September 2, 1977. Together they started a family, and raised three beautiful children. Michael worked hard to provide for his family. He was a local business owner in the maintenance industry. Michael started his company by purchasing his first street sweeper and driving it home across the country. Over the years, he grew his business into a successful maintenance company that included street sweeping, major snowplow contracts, and a niche repair shop. He was devoted to the many aspects of his business and was always thinking of new ideas, a “man-of-all-work”.

Michael loved being outdoors. He was an avid gardener; he loved to grow his own vegetables in the garden and share them with his family, friends, and neighbors. He loved taking trips and long drives around New England with his family. Michael was a “self-taught” mechanic who loved motors, sports cars, and motorcycles; there wasn’t a motor that he would not take apart and make better. Michael enjoyed watching car auctions and auto restoration shows on television. He was a huge fan of NASCAR and enjoyed taking his family up to the racetrack in New Hampshire.

The most important part of Michael’s life was his family. His love for them was unconditional; he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and a true friend to many. He loved spending time talking, and passing down his wisdom to his two daughters and son. Michael worked hard through the adversity of his illness to see his daughters get married and to become a “Papa”; Michael was a true inspiration to those who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.

Michael was the devoted husband of Theresa A. (Scalesse) Russo of Wilmington. He was the beloved father of Michelle Mallon & her husband Brendan of Wilmington, Danielle Tisei & her husband Michael of Peabody and Eric Russo of Boston. Michael was the loving “Papa” of Ryker Tisei. He was the dear brother of James Russo of Wilmington, Carol Baldwin of Greenfield, NH, Richard Russo & his wife Marlene of Dracut, Gary Russo of California and Tracy Knickle & her husband Mark of Billerica. Michael is survived by his mother-in-law, Teresa Scalesse of Middleton and was the brother-in-law of Sue & Don Cavanaugh of Middleton, Janet & Paul Bailey of Gilford, NH, Vinny & Carol Scalesse of Tewksbury, and the late Keith (Harvey) Baldwin. Michael is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave, (Rt. 62), Wilmington, on Friday, January 16th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Wildwood Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, January 15th, from 4-8 p.m.

Memorial donations in Michael’s name can be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.

  4. linda campbell says:

Mickey and I were fortunate enough through a series of circumstances to be able to sit down and talk some years ago. It was theraputic for both of us, as we shared a common bond. My brother, Dennis campbell was Mickey’s best friend at the time of my brother’s sudden death Nov. of 1969. Mickey and I visited at my home in Tyngsboro, due to the fact that my son, Bob Connorton and Mickey had met and become friends, not knowing that there was a connection there already. Life has it’s surprises and blessings. I’m sure that Denny and Mickey are already renewing their friendship in Heaven. My deepest sympathy to the family. It hurts to lose a love one.

  5. Paul White says:

I am absolutely devastated by the news of Mickey’s passing. The memories come flooding back. All the good times when we were young. Mickey was always fun to hang out with and we did a lot of that then. Over the years it was traditional to stop by the Russo’s and have some of Rudy’s special eggnog and visit with Mickey and his parents and siblings. It was on one of those visits some years ago that I last spent some time with Mickey. My sincerest sympathy to all.
