Edith M. (Higginbotham) Michelson, age 86, of Gloucester, formerly of Wilmington, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield surrounded by her family.

Edith was born on November 23, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Madeline B. (Eldridge) Higginbotham. Edith grew up in the family home on Chestnut Street in Wilmington and she attended Wilmington Public Schools, graduating from Wilmington High School Class of 1940. Prior to retiring, Edith was a buyer for the Gilchrest Company in Boston for many years. Edith was very involved in the Wilmington Community, she was Past President of the Mass. State Federation of Women’s Clubs now known as the Women’s Club of Wilmington, she was on the Arts Council, Friends of the Library Council, and a member of Acacia Chapter of the Eastern Star. In her spare time Edith enjoyed gardening, taking walks, exercising, music, the symphony on Thursday evenings with the ladies, and a good Manhattan with her dear friend the late Elsie Woolaver. She moved to Gloucester to be closer to her daughter several years ago as her health began to fail. Edith was the oldest of five siblings, she was a caretaker and very devoted to her family, she was a good friend to many, and will be missed dearly.

Edith was the beloved wife of the late Robert B. Michelson, loving mother of Stella (Starr) and her husband Mark Godfried of Gloucester, dear grandmother of Andrew and his wife Tara (Glynn) Godfried and great-granddaugher Molly Joan Godfried all of Danvers, dear sister of Sarah Cosman of Wilmington, Katherine Dec of Lowell, and the late Barbara Bowley and Herbert Higginbotham, Jr., Edith is also survived by several nieces & nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, July 9th at 10:00 a.m. in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Edith’s name may be made to The Sunshine Fund at Masconomet Healthcare Center, 123 High St., Topsfield, MA 01983 or to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
