Mullin, Robert

January 16th, 2011

Robert J. Mullin, age 86, a long-time resident of Wilmington, died Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the E. N. Rogers Veterans Hospital in Bedford following a lengthy illness.

Born on March 20, 1924, in Somerville, MA, Robert was the dear son of the late John and Susan (Hogan) Mullin. Robert grew up in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School. While working for the Boston & Maine Railroad, he was inducted into the United States Navy on May 26, 1943 and served as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Canberra. Robert received several commendations for his service and was honorably discharged on February 13, 1946.

Robert returned to his Somerville roots and took a job with the Somerville Post Office where he was a well liked mailman in Somerville for many years prior to retiring. Always a worker, Robert also had his own painting company and painted houses on the side to make sure he provided for his family, they were most important to him.

Robert married his childhood sweetheart Geraldine Walsh on May 16, 1954, the couple moved to Wilmington into a home that Robert purchased right before the wedding. Over the years they remodeled the house to fit the growing needs of their family and made that house their “home”.

Robert loved living in Wilmington and he liked his neighbors, he was always keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood. He could be found outside puttering in his yard or fixing something around the house, he was a very “hands on” type of guy.

Robert will be fondly remembered as a hard worker, devoted family man, for his love of dogs, and for being an all around nice guy, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for a friend or neighbor. He will be dearly missed.

Robert was the beloved husband of Geraldine G. (Walsh) Mullin, devoted father of Edward J. Mullin & his wife Trisha of Nashua, Robert W. Mullin & his wife Cheryl of Derry, NH, and Lyn S. Wilson of Florida, loving “Papa” of Aaron, Shawn, Sierra, Jon, Rhiannon, Angela, Sirena, Raven, and great-grandchildren Cheyenne, Blake, Isaiah, and Kairi, son of the late John and Susan (Hogan) Mullin and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
