O’Brien, Nora “Nonie”

Nora A. (O’Keefe) O’Brien, fondly known as “Nonie” to her family and friends, age 96, a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, died peacefully at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham on Thursday, February 3, 2011, with her family at her side.

Nonie was born in Charlestown on March 24, 1914, she was the cherished daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget (Meehan) O’Keefe. Nonie moved to Medford as a young girl and was a graduate of Medford High School. All throughout her earlier years Nonie vacationed with her family at Silver Lake in Wilmington, it was a wonderful summer retreat where everyone got together and many memories were made.

Prior to retiring, Nonie was employed for many years at New England Telephone, she was an operator and an active member of the Pioneers after her retirement.

Nonie married John J. O’Brien on June 15, 1940 together they celebrated 47 years of marriage before his passing in 1987. Nonie and John moved to Wilmington in 1954 and together they raised four wonderful children.

Nonie loved being a mother, she was caring, compassionate, and worked hard for her family. Both Nonie and John were dedicated to their children’s education. They were both the youngest children of Irish immigrants. The value of a college education for their children was a goal that they accomplished through sacrifice and hard work.

Nonie was also involved in her community, she and her husband were very active at St. Thomas of Villanova Church and also performed in their fund raising variety shows. Nonie also enjoyed being a member of the Wilmington Senior Center, where she participated in their many activities.

Nonie will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was hardworking, kind, and always doing for others, she was a good neighbor and a true friend who will be missed by many.

Nonie was the beloved wife of the late John J. O’Brien, devoted mother of Philip J. O’Brien & his wife Joan of Venice, FL and Acton, MA, Dr. David J. O’Brien & his wife Dianna of Columbia, MO, Janet M. Lettieri of Franklin, MA, and Nancy McMahon of Stowe, MA, loving grandmother of 6 grandchildren and 9great-grandchildren, dear sister of the late Mary Nichols, Helen Browne, Margaret Quinlan, John, Patrick, David, and Timothy O’Keefe. Nonie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Wednesday, February 9th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m.. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours Tuesday, February 8th from 4-8 p.m.
