Patrick J. Devine

March 28th, 2016

Patrick J. Devine, age 83, of Wilmington, formerly of Medford, died unexpectedly on March 27, 2016, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington.

Patrick was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, on January 7, 1933. He was the beloved son of the late Patrick and Gretta (Ashe) Devine and was raised and educated in County Kerry, Ireland. He married the “love of his life” Joan Flynn in 1959. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1960, settling in Cambridge where they resided for a few years. Patrick and Joan moved to Medford in 1967 where they made their home for over 30 years and raised a beautiful family.

Always a hard worker, Patrick worked for Volkswagen before venturing out and starting his own company, Pat’s Foreign Auto, which he established in the mid 1960’s in Cambridge and then relocated to Somerville. Pat was a great worker and had a vast knowledge of cars. He treated his customers like family and built a great reputation throughout the years. In 1987, after over two decades of running his own business, he brought his talents to Sentry Auto Group and remained there until 1998. Following his retirement, Pat and Joan moved to Wilmington in 1999. He soon began to work part-time for the town of Wilmington Water Department right up until his passing.

Pat was known to be an avid sports fan and athlete. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing hurling, and, in his later years, it was golf that he enjoyed. As a Boston sports fan, Pat loved to watch and attend countless Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox games and especially enjoyed attending Bruins games with his son Brian.

Pat will be fondly remembered as a “great guy”, hardworking, and very kind. He was a man of great faith and was a communicant of St. Francis Church in Medford where he volunteered many hours at the food pantry.

Pat was a wonderful family man and a great friend whose unconditional love and devotion was evident in everything he did. He will be truly missed by all.

Patrick was the beloved husband of Joan P. (Flynn) Devine, devoted father of Patrick Devine of Medford, Siobhan O’Flaherty & husband Kieran of Wilmington, and Brian Devine & wife Lisa of Medford. Loving “Papa” of Rebecca Devine, Cailin O’Flaherty, Lauryn Devine, Brendan O’Flaherty, and great-granddaughter Gia. Cherished son of the late Patrick and Gretta (Ashe) Devine, dear brother of Michael Devine & wife Nora of Annascaul, Ireland, Tom Devine & wife Zita of Skerries, Ireland, the late Sheila Donovan and Kitty Devine. Patrick is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington, on Thursday, March 31st at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Patrick’s memory may be made to Friends of St. Francis Food Pantry, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, MA 02155. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington.
