Peterson, Edith

Edith M. Peterson, age 90, of Wilmington, formerly of Reading, died suddenly, Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Winchester Hospital.

Born in Boston, MA, on July 23, 1918, Edith was the beloved daughter of the late Evart and Persis (Ainsley) Peterson. Edith grew up in New Hampshire until the age of eight when she moved with her family to Reading, MA, where she resided for 70 years. Edith was educated in Reading and was a graduate of Reading High School. She was a member of the Old South Methodist Church in Reading for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday School. Edith was also a member of the Rebekah’s and the Reading Grange for many years. She moved with her sisters to Wilmington in 1996.

Prior to retirement, Edith worked as a press operator for the United Technology Company in Peabody for many years. In her spare time, Edith enjoyed traveling, especially to California to visit friends, she was an avid reader, she enjoyed her crossword puzzles and word searches, and she loved watching her television and was a soap opera “addict”.

Edith came from a very large and close knit family, she loved being with the children and taking part in all the family celebrations and events. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful woman who lived a long and full life, and she will be greatly missed.

Edith was the dear sister of Doris Peterson, June Nickerson, Louise Peterson, and Charles Peterson and his wife Shirley all of Wilmington, Constance Chepulis and her husband Paul of North Reading, and the late Ruth Kenson, Laverne Peterson, Phyllis Peterson, Raymond Henderson, and Spencer Henderson. Edith is also survived and will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Funeral Home Service will take place on Saturday, June 20th at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the family lot at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody. Visiting hours Friday, June 19th from 4-8 p.m.

Memorial donations in Edith’s name may be made to the Old South Methodist Church, Attn: Memorial Fund, 6 Salem St., Reading, MA 01867.

    Although I cannot be there with you, my thoughts and prayers are. I will remember Edith fondly. She was a gentle soul with positive energy and a ready smile. I have sweet memories of visiting Edith, my other great aunts and great grandmother in Reading wth my grandmother Ruth. We would have tea and cookies and sit around the table and talk. It was a weekly ritual that kept us all close in each others lives.
