Phyllis M. (Meninno) Heffernan, age 84, of Wilmington, formerly a long time resident of Tewksbury, passed away surrounded by her loving family on October 5, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Phyllis was born on November 22, 1929; she was the cherished daughter of the late Frank P. and Victoria L. (Calabro) Meninno. Phyllis was born and raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School. Phyllis continued her education at Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston where she earned her Secretarial Certificate.
Phyllis went to work for her family business, Malden Waste Paper Company where her business skills and warm personality proved very useful. She was a great asset in the office as well as with the customers. Following this, she worked for many years at Reese Associates in Lowell, MA as a Customer Service Rep until she went to work for General Electric in Wilmington, where she worked until she retired in 1996.
Phyllis resided most of her adult life in Tewksbury, where she raised her three children Victoria, Robert and Nanci. No matter how hard life got some days, she put her family above all else. Her love and devotion for her family was unconditional and she beamed with pride when she spoke of them. When Phyllis became a “Nan” she was filled with such excitement; Phyllis never missed a chance to go to a school event, dance recital, or special celebration. She was so very proud when she was able to attend her grandchildren’s college graduations and be part of their special days. Phyllis would do anything for her grandchildren but above all else she just loved to spend time with them. When one of them would surprise her and stop by to chat she talked about it for days. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and the feeling was mutual. They just adored their Nan.
Holidays, family celebrations, and Sunday dinners were a tradition for Phyllis; she always looked forward to having her family around her. Phyllis was a great cook and she loved to prepare her phenomenal sauce and meatballs, for which she was most known, along with many other delicious recipes to share with her family, extended family, and friends. All were welcome in Phyllis’ home.
Phyllis had a magnetic personality and she made many friends wherever she went. Her great sense of humor, hearty laugh, and her ability to have fun always drew others to her. Everyone loved to be with Phyllis! Her favorite pastime was going to Bingo. If there was a good game of Bingo going on she would definitely be at the table with a crowd around her. She also enjoyed reading a good book, being at the ocean, soaking up the sun and a nice lunch or dinner out with whomever she could entice.
Phyllis will be fondly remembered for her kindness towards others and her ability to give you a shoulder to cry on when needed; she was a loving mother, Nan, and friend to many. She will be especially missed by her Cousin Mary with whom she spoke every day. If you knew her, you couldn’t help but love her and she will be greatly missed by all.
Phyllis was the devoted mother of Victoria Holmes of Wilmington, Robert Heffernan of West Newbury and Nanci Bolduc & her husband Jerry of North Andover, loving Nan of Tanya and C.J. Holmes, Robert and Steven Heffernan, Joshua, Matthew and Jessica Bolduc, mother-in-law of Chuck Holmes, cherished daughter of the late Frank P. and Victoria L. (Calabro) Meninno, dear sister of the late Francis P. Meninno. Phyllis is also survived by many loving cousins and friends.
