Representative James R. Miceli

April 23rd, 2018

Representative James R. Miceli passed away peacefully on April 21, 2018.

A man of unerring moral principles, consummate integrity and deep devotion to his constituents and, above all, his family, State Representative James R. Miceli was the second-longest serving member of the Massachusetts Legislature. He continuously represented the towns of Wilmington and Tewksbury since his 1977 election to the House of Representatives, and he was a passionate and tenacious advocate for his constituents and the causes he held dear. During his 21st term, he was Vice Chair of the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change and served on the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development, the House Committee on Personnel and Administration, and the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Rep. Miceli grew up in Boston’s North End and graduated from Boston English High School in 1953. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Northeastern University in 1958 and met his beloved wife, Jean Mattson, while both were students at Northeastern. They were married on August 9, 1958, in Rockport, Massachusetts, and moved to Wilmington in 1961. Rep. Miceli began his career in the insurance industry at State Mutual Insurance Company in 1958, moving to Liberty Mutual Insurance Company a year later. In 1972, he joined the Walter G. Leavitt Agency in Stoneham and opened his agency in Wilmington in 1975. Rep. Miceli retired from his insurance business in 2000 and focused on his work in the legislature for the next nearly two decades.

Rep. Miceli’s political career commenced in 1963 with his appointment to the Wilmington Planning Board. He was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 1966, and he served four terms, two as Chairman, until 1978. His first term in the House of Representatives began in late 1977.

Known for the legendary work ethic that drove his above-and-beyond effort for all he served, Rep. Miceli was kind, compassionate and exceptionally thoughtful in the many ways that he helped people throughout his life. Above all, he was dedicated to his family, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, Hope, James Jr. and Christina, and his cherished grandchildren, Andrew Jr., James III, Katherine, Q Jane, Alexander and Christopher.

Rep. Miceli is the son of the late Vincenzo and Louise (Dermanjian) Miceli and brother of the late Josephine McCoy. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; daughter and son-in-law Hope and Andrew Spalla of Trumbull, Connecticut; son and daughter-in-law James Jr. and Joanne Miceli of Sparta, New Jersey; and daughter and son-in-law Christina Miceli and Sanford Arbogast of Tewksbury. He is also survived by his grandchildren Andrew Spalla Jr. of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Katherine Spalla of Astoria, New York; James III and his wife, Shanna, Miceli of Arlington, Virginia; Q Jane and her husband, Alexander, Carleton of Fort Lupton, Colorado; and Alexander Arbogast and Christopher Arbogast of Tewksbury. Rep. Miceli is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, MA, on Thursday, April 26th from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m.

He got so much accomplished for the towns of Wilmington and Tewksbury. Even if he didn’t win what he tried out going out after, he would continue doing things until it actually would materialize. 11. Mary Kiesinger and Family says:

    Dear Jean and Family,

We are truly and deeply saddened by the death of our very special friend Jim. He was always a very loving and caring person and Rep who will be extremely difficult to replace. We could always count on him to vote from “the hill” in his office taking each of our preferences into careful consideration. Jim attended many of the wakes and funerals of his and everyone else’s. He sat very quietly in a place where he wouldn’t take away from the deceased attention and love. He knew us by name and always could spare time to chat with us as to how we were doing, etc. We hope and pray that God will continue to love and take care of Jim, Jean and their wonderful family too!

    With love, and deepest sympathy,

    Mary Kiesinger and family

He gave so much of his life to the people of Wilmington and Tewksbury. I can’t imagine that there is a person who ever lived in these two towns who wasn’t helped by Jim. When I heard the sad news all I could think of was who will we go to now? There was nobody like him when it came to giving his all to help individuals and families in his district or advocating fervently for the needs of his communities. We will all miss him so much. God bless you Jim and thank you for all you have done for us. You have left us quite a legacy.

    Dear Jean and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to all of you. Jim was one of the kindest individuals I have ever known. As a State Representative he gave his all to the communities and beyond; many should follow his footsteps. When he said he would help he did. He was truly a kind, compassionate person and proved that through his actions. I will miss our chats at the Demoulas and different venues such as 4th of July on the common and Veterans events. I am so grateful Jim that you were able to join many of my Veterans events such as the Annual Dinners in North Reading. I always told you that you were the only democrat I voted for:): because you devoted your life to helping others allowing them to see the light at the end of the tunnel when they were in despair. You are going to be missed by so many you have touched through the years. My heart goes out to all the Miceli Family. God Speed State Rep Jim Miceli I know you are in the comfort of our Lords hands. Dear Jean and family, Your loss and pain at this moment may seem overwhelming but so was the gift and life of Jim. You so generously shared him with us. As a recently ordained priest arriving in Wilmington in February 1960, Jim Miceli became for me the model of what a public servant is: in his devotion and love for his wife and family, flowing graciously to the community. What a gift you shared with us!. May he rest in peace and may your hearts rejoice with pride. Fr. Paul

It is hard to imagine our world without Jim Miceli. Jim was a true patriot and hero to many. He adored his family, respected his staff and colleges and worked diligently to help his people in Tewksbury and Wilmington.

Jim was not just our Representative but our friend. He connected with his people and could always be counted on. He was extremely helpful to the elderly and our Tewksbury Senior Citizens.

What I will miss most about Jim will be our conversations about family, politics and life in general. Jim could converse with people in all walks of life. He shared a genuine and respectful bond with all whom he met.

Jim will hold a special place in many a heart including mine.

May God Bless and watch over those he treasured most…his loving family.

  30. Barbara Reinhart-Fitzgerald says:

Mrs. Miceli, Hope, Jim Jr., and Tina: My heart is broken for you all. I can’t tell you how truly sad that I feel for you. Jim was one of a kind individual. He was truly dedicated, kind, and sincere and he loved you all so much. He would just beam with pride when I asked him about each of you and all of the grandchildren. Jim shared his love of his family and his time with the people of Wilmington and Tewksbury. Jim took the time to ask about everyone on a first name basis. No matter how big a request was given to him, Jim always came through. He gave and gave and never asked for anything in return. He was truly a saint on this earth. God has asked for the return of this saint. As your husband/father/grandfather would always say “if you need anything, let me help.” I am always here for you as he was for us. I hope that the great memories of this wonderful man will get you through the dark days. Irish proverb: Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

My son suffered the disease of addiction and there were more than a hand full of times i call Rep Muceli to help get him into treatment. Rep Muceli always got on the phone and duscussed my wishes and concerned for Carl. He was always able to get Carl into treatment. Tewjsbury/Wilmington have suffered a great loss.
I used to tell the Rep. early on in Carls disease i had taken my middle son to a forum at Somerville High ran by the Mayer and how Somerville residences received beds 1st at Somerville Hospital and how i thought this is how Tewksbury should be. I told him of Somervilles neighborhood watch groups and how they did not treat addiction as a moral issue. The cities people worked together for their sick.
Rep. Miceli would listen to me in enerest at 1st he dudnt know me but grew to know me.
Were lossing one if the best. One who truly cared for all his people.
