Retired Everett Police Patrolman Ronald C. “Red” Gundersen

March 29th, 2014

Retired Everett Police Patrolman Ronald C. “Red” Gundersen, age 80, of Wilmington, formerly  a long-time resident of Everett, passed away peacefully at home on March 28th, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

Red was born in Everett, MA, on June 22, 1933; he was the cherished son of the late Carl M. and Isabelle K. (Thompson) Gundersen.  Red was raised and educated in Everett and was a graduate of Everett High School Class of 1951.  Red was an avid athlete and an exceptional baseball player; a “stand out” for the Everett High Team.

Red was inducted into the United States Army on May 8, 1953, serving overseas during the Korean War.  Red received several commendations during active duty as a Corporal and was honorably discharged on April 23, 1955; returning home to his family in Everett.

Red was appointed to the Everett Police Department in 1955 faithfully serving the community for more than 33 years before retiring in 1988.

Red married his “sweetheart” Margaret E. Walker on April 28, 1962, sharing more than 51 years and together they raised a beautiful family.  Red was very devoted to his family and enjoyed every moment they spent together.  Red and Margaret lived in Everett for many years before moving to Wilmington in 1992.

In his spare time, Red thoroughly enjoyed watching sports and spent as much time on the golf course as he could.  Red was not only a huge New England Sports Fan but he also considered himself an avid golfer who got two holes in one; a fact that he was very proud of.

Red will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and friends and for his singing ability; he loved to belt out his favorite tunes.  Red will be greatly missed by all.

Red was the beloved husband of Margaret E. (Walker) Gundersen of Wilmington, devoted father of Karl Gundersen & his wife Maria of Medford, Kristen Michaud & her husband Christopher of Pelham, NH, Kurt Gundersen & his wife Grace of Indonesia, and Keren Reese & her husband Kevin of Wilmington, loving “Papa” of Kassidy Reese, Cullen Michaud, Connor Michaud, Karlie Reese, Karissa Gundersen, Kahsy Gundersen, and Kaelyn Gundersen, cherished son of the late Carl M. and Isabelle K. (Thompson) Gundersen, dear brother of Lawrence J. Gundersen & his wife Betty of West Brookfield, MA.  Ronald is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rt. 62), Wilmington, for Visitation on Tuesday, April 1st, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 noon.  Interment to follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
