Rev. John D. Harrington

Reverend John D. Harrington, of Wilmington and Reading, who served five decades in the priesthood, died Sunday, June 10th, after a brief illness at St. Dorothy’s Parish Rectory in Wilmington where he was being cared for. He was 75.

Father Harrington was born March 16, 1932, in Paddington, London, England. He was son of the late James & Ruby Margaret (Fenton) Harrington. He had just celebrated his 51st anniversary of priestly ordination on May 26th. Father Harrington attended Seminary in England and was ordained on May 26, 1956 in Westminster Cathedral, London, by Cardinal Griffin.

Father Harrington belonged to the Arch Diocese of Westminster, London, England, until his death. Father Harrington served in many parishes in England from 1956 until 1986, such as St. John Vianney in So. Tottenham, Corpus Christi in Kings Cross, St. Charles Square, Kensington, St. Mary’s, Chelsea and also lived at Five Precious Wounds, Stonebridge while teaching at Cardinal Hinsley Roman Catholic Boys High School, Harlesden, where he taught from 1976 to 1986.

In 1986, Father Harrington got permission from his Bishop to teach in America for 2 years and spent 20 years teaching in the United States. He first taught at St. Clement in Somerville, MA, for one year and then at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, MA, where he joined the faculty in 1987 as a member of the Religious Education. In 1991 he was appointed chairperson of the Department of Religious Education.

During his stay in the United States Father Harrington was also a weekend assistant at St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington, MA, until his death. He will be remembered as an active and very caring member of Austin Preparatory School and St. Dorothy’s Parish.

Father Harrington was the dear brother of brother of the late Roy Harrington and Mary Haynes, he is survived by many nieces, a nephew, and a special friend Sr. Josephine Spencer all of England, as well as many friends at St. Dorothy’s Parish in Wilmington and Austin Preparatory School in Reading.

Father Harrington will be received on Tuesday, June 12, at 2:00 p.m. for the Right of Reception at St. Dorothy’s Church, 120 Main St., Wilmington, his visiting hours will continue from 2-8 p.m., Vigil Service will begin at 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Harrington will be held on Wednesday, June 13 at St. Dorothy’s Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
