Richard “Dick” Steenbruggen

Richard Steenbruggen, “Dick”, age 78, of Plaistow, NH, formerly of Wilmington and Reading, died peacefully on April 4, 2014, at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.

Richard was born on February 18, 1936, in Medford, MA; he was the dear son of the late Francis H. and Catherine (Aldenburg) Steenbruggen.  Richard was raised and educated in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School.

Richard went to work as a typesetter in the newspaper industry working for the Malden Evening News and Medford Mercury Newspapers for more than 30 years.  Richard was a hard worker and a dedicated employee; he made many friends throughout the years with his co-workers, everyone liked to be around Richard.

Richard also worked with his family for over 20 years at First Electric Motor Company; the Steenbruggen Family Business, Richard loved to work with his family members, they always enjoyed each other’s company.

Throughout the 1960’s, Richard was a member of the Army National Guard who proudly served his country.

Richard moved to Wilmington in the early 1970’s, where he resided for many years before making his home in Reading and then to Plaistow with family as his health declined. 

For many years Richard ran the pool at the YMCA in Wakefield, where he taught kids how to swim and was very involved with the Wakefield Swim Team.  Richard also volunteered with the Boy Scouts and was always willing to help the kids out in any way. 

In his spare time Richard enjoyed going to family parties, holidays, or just getting together for a quiet dinner; he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family.

Richard will be fondly remembered for his love of animals, especially his cat “Miss Beth”.  He was a very kind and caring man who would do anything for anyone.  Richard was known to be the “sweetest man” that anyone could ask for and he will be greatly missed by all.

Richard was the cherished son of the late Francis H. and Catherine (Aldenburg) Steenbruggen, dear brother of Nancy Fontaine and her husband William of Tewksbury, and the late Gerritt Steenbruggen and his late wife Lorraine, loving uncle of Cathy and David Aberle with whom he lived in Plaistow, William and Wendy Fontaine, Nancy and Clem Thresher, Ronald and Diane Steenbruggen, John and Carol Steenbruggen, the late Richard and Martha Steenbruggen, Kenneth and Nancy Steenbruggen, James and Kristen Steenbruggen, Patricia and Charles Neary and the late Gary Steenbruggen.  Richard is also survived by many great-nieces, great-nephews, and his beloved cat “Miss Beth”.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service on Wednesday, April 9th at 11:00 a.m. in the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington.  Interment to follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.  Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 8th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Memorial donations in Richard’s name may be made to the MSPCA-Angell, ATTN: Donations, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130.
