Richard E. “Dick” Bowerman

January 14th, 2014

Richard E. “Dick” Bowerman, age 72, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the Daniels House Nursing Center on January 13, 2014.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 11, 1941, Dick was the cherished son of the late Mary Elizabeth Donahue and Carleton Henry Bowerman.  Dick was raised in Cambridge and graduated from Matignon High School.  Following high school, Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  He served his country proudly and was honorably discharged.

After returning home from the service, Dick married the love of his life Patricia on June 12, 1965.  Dick and Patricia, were a true example of a couple; there wasn’t anything they wouldn’t do for each other.  They were always together and truly enjoyed each other’s company.  Following their wedding, Dick and Patricia lived in Somerville for a few years before making their home in Arlington in 1969, where they lived for over 40 years and raised their four wonderful children.

Dick worked hard to support his family, retiring after 40+ years as a banker for Shawmut, Fleet and Sovereign Banks as well as working nights at Wonderland Race Track in his younger years.  He put himself through school, attending classes at night, and earned his Bachelors of Business Administration from Suffolk University as well as attending the New England Banking Institute.  Dick enjoyed playing chess, card games, collecting trains or just sitting out on his deck.  He and Patricia loved to travel together.  They took many cruises and trips to Aruba, always having a great time.

Richard was the beloved husband and best friend of 48 years of the late Patricia A. (Wodzynski) Bowerman, devoted father of Laura Ann Ott & her husband Daniel of Apple Valley, MN, Rebecca Marie Anthony & her husband Michael of Wilmington, Mark Richard Bowerman of Wilmington, and the late Eric Charles Bowerman of Gloucester; all formerly of Arlington, loving and adored “Papa” of Breyer and Hadley Ott, Matthew, Stephen, and Lindsay Anthony, dear brother-in-law of Charlene Weekley & her husband Ronald of Melrose and “Uncle Dick” of Alison Costello and Justin Weekley.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, January 20th, for Visiting Hours from 4-6 p.m.  Immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 6:00 p.m.  In lieu flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the MGH Department of Radiation Oncology, Attn: Sarah Christensen, MGH Development Office, 165 Cambridge Street, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.
