Richard J. “Coot” Ceres

April 19th, 2017

Richard J. Ceres, fondly known as “Coot” to his family and friends, of Wilmington, formerly of East Rutherford, NJ, passed away on April 18, 2017 at the Winchester Hospital. He was 82 years old.

Richard was born on July 18, 1934 in Lyndhurst, NJ; he was the son of the late Margaret (Griffin) and Harry Ceres. Richard was raised in Lyndhurst and East Rutherford; graduating from East Rutherford School System.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 23, 1954 and proudly served during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. Richard was on active duty for two years before his honorable discharge from active duty and his transfer to the Army Reserves on September 12, 1956.

Richard married “the love of his life” Eileen C. (Monahan) Ceres in 1970; the couple settled in East Rutherford, Bergan County, NJ, where they lived for more than forty-five years and raised three wonderful children. Always helping others; Richard became very active in the Community of East Rutherford where he served as Councilman for 21 years, was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department serving as the Fire Commissioner “the Comish” for over 13 years, and was very active in Little League; volunteering as a coach and manager for countless years.

Richard owned and operated his own plumbing business; his impeccable work ethic, great people skills, honesty and fairness towards his customers made him quite a success throughout the years.

Richard was a true family man; taking care of his family was his main priority and he looked forward to the times they spent together. Richard was an avid cook and he was known as the “Weekend Warrior” in the kitchen cooking everyone’s favorite meals. When not helping others, Richard enjoyed golfing, fishing and sports; especially his beloved New York Giants where he was a season ticket holder for many years.

Richard will be remembered as an “all around great guy”, he was always giving of his time and talents to help others and his community. Richard’s love for his family and friends was unconditional and he always beamed with pride as he spoke of his children and grandchildren. Richard was truly one of a kind and will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Richard was the beloved husband of Eileen C. (Monahan) Ceres, devoted father of Thomas W. Ceres & his companion Darlene Kelley of Wilmington, Megan Ceres of Rye Brook, NY and Patrick Ceres & his wife Kristine of Blairestown, NJ, loving “Papa” of Emma and Brendan Ceres, cherished son of the late Margaret (Griffin) and Harry Ceres, dear brother of Ruth Milano & her husband Joseph of Wayne, NJ, the late William Ceres and Harry Ceres. Richard is also survived by his sister-in-law Eugenia Ceres of FL, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Sunday, April 23rd from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Service with Military Honors at 1:30 p.m.
