richards, isabelIsabel A. (Sim) Richards, age 82, a long-time resident of Wilmington, died Monday, October 19, 2009, in Hampton, NH, while being comforted by her children, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Isabel was born on December 15, 1926, in Somerville, MA, she was the dear daughter of the late Edward W. & Wilhemina (Westcot) Sim. Isabel grew up in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School Class of 1944. Following High School, Isabel commuted from Malden to Salem State Teachers College where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1948.

After college Isabel taught 6th grade English in the Malden School System for many years. Isabel was a very independent young woman during her early years of teaching she traveled abroad and also bought her first automobile in 1952 at a time when it was unusual to see a woman driver. Isabel loved English and the written word and instilled a love of education in all of her children.

On July 17, 1953, Isabel married the late Donald W. Richards in Reading, England. They were the parents of Mark, Cheryl, Lucinda, Todd, Scott, and Craig.  Isabel was a resident of Wilmington for over 50 years in the same house, where she loved to be. She raised her six children there and loved to tend to her gardens. She was a devoted mother who loved all sports and was often found at a rink or field with one or more of her children.

In her spare time Isabel gave of herself through her volunteer work. She volunteered at the Wilmington Senior Center and on April 11, 2001, was issued a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives for her outstanding volunteer service and dedication to the Wilmington Senior Citizens which was presented by Representative James Miceli.

Isabel is survived by her six children Mark Richards & his wife Sara of Greenland, NH, Cheryl Ruggiero of Nashua, NH, Lucinda Whitney & her husband Don of Brookline, NH, Todd Richards & his wife Gail of Tewksbury, Scott Richards of Dracut, and Craig Richards & his wife Kristine of N. Smithfield, RI, her grandchildren Sarah, Josh, Robert, Richard, Stephanie, Kristle, Todd, Courtney, Kelsey, Victoria, Andrew, Meghan, Katie, Emily, and great-grandson Riley, her two brothers Ken Sim & his wife Susan of Lee NH, and Richard Sim & his wife Ann of Gouvenor, NY, Isabel is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Sunday, October 25th from 1-4 PM.
